A 3-year-old boy rode his tricycle across a South Side street and into the path of a sport-utility vehicle, a deadly wreck that played out in front the boy's older sister and other neighborhood children, Chicago Police said Monday night.
Authorities were interviewing those children, hoping they can catch up with the driver who stopped, got out of the vehicle after the accident and quickly fled, said Sgt. Robert Cargie.
About 7:30 p.m. Monday, the boy and his 9-year-old sister were crossing the 6200 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, Cargie said.
The older child heard the vehicle and moved out of the way, but the toddler, who was riding a tricycle, collided with what was described as a dark blue SUV.
Witnesses tell police that after the driver stopped and got out of the vehicle, he quickly climbed back in the SUV, backed it up -- going the wrong way on the one-way street -- and drove off.
Police stopped an SUV matching the description of the vehicle involved in the fatal crash, but they quickly ruled out the driver and that vehicle's involvement, Cargie said.
Police planned to continue questioning residents in the area and checking for evidence that might lead them to the driver.
An officer at the scene told reporters that only children had come forward and volunteered information about the crash. That includes a little girl who was "traumatized" by what she saw, said Chicago Police Officer Maurice Clayton.
"No grownup has told us anything," he said.
Investigators, in the meantime, were going to reconstruct the accident to try to determine the cause of the wreck, Cargie said. Police did say that it was dark at the time and that the brother and sister, who live in the area, emerged from between two parked cars to cross the street.
Anyone with information about the driver or the accident is asked to call 911 or 311.
Quite possibly the best "vehicle of death" headline ever!
I knew it was only a matter of time before SUVs started targeting Children...
We need legislation to keep engines out of the hands of SUV's!
Maybe a 7-day waiting period when buying an SUV (and closing the Used Car Lot Loophole is a MUST!)
Those SUV's sure have a mind of their own!
I think a lot of people who leave the scene of an accident do it because they're scared of being sued into the poor house. I'm not excusing what this SUV did, but Bush is absolutely right about tort reform. Accidents are a fact of life and we have to deal with them in a better way.
They need a refreshers course on Chicago Rules of the Road.
Did he actually say 'grownup'?
Some of them are the right side of justice:
Lisa Donovan... another MSM All Star. Reporting as she sees it.
(Hint: Lisa, SUV's don't run over people.... the driver of the SUV does. Just in case you didn't know).
lol -
Hate to laugh with a story like this, but you speak the truth.
SUVs for Bush.
311? Is that some new secret number I don't know about!?
I think the SUV could end up with court supervision.
never mind the fact that the line of sight on many SUV's (hummer) is above the roof line on most compacts, let alone the height of a child
That't the direct line to the "Hall of Justice"

That SUV is now a martyr. It is now in Paradise drinking premium petro while attended by 72 lady SUVs.
what would a lady SUV look like?
A three year old child riding a tricycle without adult supervision in the street? There's a grownup at fault here, but they probably weren't in the SUV.
