Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

But your proposal is that government machine-gun people caught near the border. Hmm. How is that different fromm, say, East German border policy?

Easy. East German machine guns were trying to keep people in. Did you have a problem with the logic and "reasoning" portions of the SATs?

Putting the military on our borders seems hypocritical when we're trying to discourage that sort of activity elsewhere in the world.

Educate me, please. Where exactly is that "sort of activity" happening elsewhere in the world? And why on earth would "we" (speak for yourself) discourage it?

I know national sovereignty doesn't mean much these days, but I wasn't aware that it was a dead concept.

Show me your papers please? What happened to the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated??

One teeny little thing: you know as well as I do that the initial concept of "the right of the people..." referred to citizens not invaders in red coats or any other color. Can you imagine the first Americans granting citizenship to the bastard child of a Hessian?

Well, unfortunately, the law will apply to you and me and each and every citizen and each and every employer. Our employers will be required to ask for our papers and we will be forced to present them. Or else.

By the way, I'm from a family of 9 children.

That's wonderful. Are they all on public assistance? Do they all use emergency rooms for routine medical care?

Didn't think so.

You seem to be under the mistaken assumption that I favor illegal immigration and or socialist redistributionism. Let me relieve you of that worry. I don't.

How are employers going to know if a worker is legal or illegal?

A profoundly relevant question. Federal, state and local PC laws actually actively prohibit making it possible. At the federal level, where does the buck stop?

I don't know, but I believe we're back to square one. It's not PC, it's the 4th amendment, ie, the right to be secure in our personal papers and effects.

You are wrong. There is no evidence that Americans, as it stands now, would follow your lead.

You are not only wrong but delusional. First of all, there is no evidence whatsoever that a "leader" is needed, certainly not me. If you listen closely, you will hear the rumble of millions of Americans spontaneously rising in anger; leaderless.

It's just a matter of "when" until the light comes on over your head.

I'm not delusional, I am clear thinking.

Most americans, thankfully, do not want snipers and landmises at the border. If there is, specifically point to it. Please do not cite polls that say that 'illigal immigration is a great concern.' I don't argue that a lot of americans consider that a great priority. I don;t see any evidence that they advocate, in wide numbers, draconian and needlessly brutal measures.

Opinions like yours are marginalized because of their needless extremism. And that's a good thing. You and your millions of imaginary friends can go rise somewhere else - maybe you call all meet in a linen closet somewhere. I am sure there will be room to spare.

If those 500,000 came here legally on work visas, would you be satisfied?

I would.

If they did not print the "visas" themselves, and the "visas" are not convertible to residency under some delusional "amnesty" or other-weasel-word mechanism, and if the concept of "anchor baby" was also explicitly excluded.

Else why even pretend that the concept of legal immigration still exists as something other than a vague outdated concept?

Have not the courts already ruled if the cops stop you and demand identification, you, as an American, have to give it to them?

Unless you're NOT American, and are an illegal...

Gotta protect our nation. Way too many blue eyed blondes here...

The last general poll that I saw which listed the immigration issue as an option to check off, had it come in below marijuana legalization.

Many of the issues that Americans are concerned about are directly or indirectly affected by illegal immigration. For instance, most Americans would say that they're more concerned with finding a job than they are about stopping illegal immigration. But many jobs are filled by illegal immigrants, which makes it more difficult for many Americans to find a job.

Most Americans would say that they're more concerned with their children getting a quality education in their local public school system than they are about stopping illegal immigration. But one of the reasons that many American children aren't receiving a quality education is because many schools are filled with illegal immigrant children who aren't well versed in English, so it takes more time for them to learn, and this slows down the learning process for the American students because the teacher has to go at a slower pace. Also, having all of these illegal immigrant students in our public schools adds to overcrowding in the classrooms, which also affects the quality of education that American students are receiving.

These are just two of many issues in which Americans would probably say that they're more concerned about a particular issue than they are about stopping illegal immigration. But many of these other issues, just as with jobs and quality of education in our public schools, are also affected by illegal immigration.

LOL!
Have you filled out a job application lately? Yes, even prior to 911.

The "or else" is pretty much automatic!

See ya!

Thank you for the chuckle. Well... it was more of a guffaw.

No normal person is ever as certain as a fool.
I am willing to let history speak for itself, yes, even if it proves me wrong.

See ya then!

Yes, I know that. I'm objecting to the idea of expanding the idea to a national ID system as others have proposed on this thread.

Quips aside, you have not answered my challenge for any data supporting your insistence that there is a strong public mandate for draconian tactics on the Mexican border.
