Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

I think increasing border patrol staffing and improving technology to isolate breaches of security on the border is a good start.

I think crafting policy to incur some kind of serious cost to Mexico for the illegals that cross over with the government's tacit endorsement would be good.

The one thing I do know for certain is that militarizing the border is too violent a solution for this serious problem.

Yeah and then there is this al queda seeks gang ties.
For all the talk about constitutional rights, there is a war on right now. And no, I'm not talking about taking away more rights, just enforce the laws already on the books. And I still say that those laws are a lot less intrusive and unconstitutional as "laws" such as CFR. Again, what part of "Congress shall make no law..." doesn't the supreme court understand?

It's a totally BS answer....

There are a few individuals here that continually epound on how the united States of America can not possably close the mexico border, just fence or wall it off and keep it closed except for the proper crossing popints and bridges.

Here is a bit of my feedback to such nonsence.

North Korean blockhouse that I was told are too expensive to build by the u.S on the mexican border.  Strange, North Korea is FAMOUS for being just dirt poor.  The can build blockhouses on their border.  I bet if we had blockhouses on our border we could keep fresh paint on them and fix the roof.

My lord goodness graceious!  Are those electrical wires ?   HOW MEAN SPRITED.

In short, there is NO REASON why this county can not close the mexican border and Bush playing the toe in the dirt aw shucks "can't be done" routine is just politricks, nothing more.

If you read that article --- or many border articles --- (there were a lot of Mexicans shot in the past couple weeks in this part of the border), the border is already very violent.

How many troops do we have in Germany? In Bosnia? And, shocking as it might sound, the defense of our homeland is the primary reason for government's existence. Maybe we just might have to stop building a couple Robert K. Byrd Highways in order to get the military to the full strength it needs to do its primary function.

1992. the last time the GOP actually took a stand on that issue. Oh yeah, also the last time a Republican won a normal election in CA for governor. And then we have a recall, a major issue of which was illegal alien drivers licenses and the governor who signed that in too law got booted. Gee, I wonder if their might be a lesson in those facts.

So the assault rifle n the closet will take down the next airplane flying into the office building?

You mention this is the Israeli model. The Israeli model is also the militarization of their border and the erecting of a security barrier. Yeah, maybe we do agree on using Israel as a model.

Actually, the poor SOBs in North Korea do. How bad does the "Dear Leader" have to have screwed his nation up to make China look like the solution?

Now you know that these are just honest hard working illegal aliens. Please, let's not confront this reality. I'm too fragile. ;-)

That the national party threw lots of support to Cannon, just like they did Toomey in Pennsylvania.

Well, I SUPPOSE that there are SOME places that are not exactly screaming out for a patrolled fence. That appears to be an area more easily controlled by radar detection and some p-dog shooter "interdiction."

meaning, the national Party supported the incumbent of dubious conservatism over the rather solid challenger.
