First Print Story on the Outing of Congressman David Dreier on the Internet

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- San Gabriel Valley Congressman David Dreier is the latest GOP member to be outed as a homosexual Republican by Mike Rogers, former development director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and his blogactive.com Web site. Doug Ireland, longtime radical political journalist, media critic and self-described purveyor of "investigative opinion," defends the outing and assesses Dreier's political future in this first discussion of the outing in the print media. Already Ireland's story has caused a stir. Several radio stations have called Ireland for comment and many are debating whether Ireland should have kept the story on the Internet. "I have not the slightest doubt that the outing campaign initiated by Mike Rogers' blogactive.com and supported by Raw Story's reporting is accurate in exposing Dreier," Ireland insists. "Moreover, in the course of reporting this story, I talked to a gay member of Congress who has observed Dreier in gay behavior and is 100% sure, as this member told me, that Dreier is gay. And, clearly, Dreier's demagogic political homophobia justifies reporting the outing campaign targeting him."

For some reason, I don;t fear your judgment. BTW, you don;t think that a Congressman, head of the rules committee, who would be vulnerable to blackmail is not an issue?

And again, why the social conservative movement did not become large until the 1980s was that prior to the 60s and 70s, America's moral consensus was pretty well agreed to. IT was only when our society underwent what Paul Johnson calls "America's Suicide Attempt" in the 1960s that this consensus began unraveling and folks had to start battling politically to preserve it.

Ans, just one more thought. It was "religious nuts" - abolitionist - who founded this party. I hope it stays true to its principles.

No, I am not wrong; the GOP has NEVER EVER been about telling people what they can and cannot do in their bedrooms until the Holy Rollers took over back in the '80s.

With all due respect, it's gone way way beyond privacy issues and into homosexual indoctrination in our schools, hate crimes, homosexual marriage, homosexual adoption and more...much more.

However, since Drier appears not to play into that much and has a lifetime ACU 92, I don't much care whether he is hetero, homo, or pan sexual.

Watching the homosexual community in California *out* this person reveals the design to simply add to their count of gays in office. The more gays in office, the better the democrats are able to sell the idea that gays wield more power than their actual numbers among the populace suggest. The more they can sell an agenda at odds with one man, one woman marriage, the more at risk one of the most basic values GWB has gone on record as defending in earnest becomes.

Sure, that makes me care. I'm not alone. As the various state legislative initiatives play out, you'll find overwhelming support for banning gay marriage, outing this congressperson and his supporters even more.

Chief of Staff alleged to have lived with Dreier has unusually high salary

By John Byrne | Raw Story Editor

Brad Smith, the chief of staff to Republican Californian congressman David Dreier, with whom he is said to have lived, is paid an unusually high salary relative to the chief of staffs of other powerful congressmen, including Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

Rep. Dreier was formally outed as gay by activist Mike Rogers, at blogACTIVE.com.

After a tip was received Wednesday, RAW STORY acquired the Congressional staff disbursements from the House of Representatives document office.

The tip suggested that Smith was paid far more than anyone else in Dreier’s office, which turned out to be true. And, while there are chiefs of staff for leadership offices in the House who are paid equally (such as the chief of staff to the Majority Leader), this site has been unable to find any chief of staff for a congressional office who makes as much as Smith.

Smith made $156,600 during the last reporting period, just $400 shy of the highest paid White House staff member, Assistant to the President Karl Rove, who made $157,000. It is also $400 less than President George W. Bush’s chief of staff, Andrew Card, who receives an annual salary of $157,000.

What is more, Smith enjoys a provision of House Committee rules which allows a congressman to pay some of a staffer’s salary from the committee budget. As Dreier is the Chairman of the Committee on Rules, this allows Smith to collect $106,000 on top of his $50,600 office salary.

Concurrently, the Rules Committee has its own chief of staff and a minority staff director, who each make $156,600, but are paid only from the committee.

A call placed to Dreier’s Washington office Thursday evening, asking for Smith, was disconnected.

The next highest paid staff member in Dreier’s office is his press secretary, Joanna Harmsen, who serves as Press Secretary to the Rules Committee and Dreier’s office makes $85,000.

By comparison, the chief of staff to Bill Young, who chairs the even more prominent House Appropriations Committee, makes $151,956, more than $4,600 less than Smith.

The chief of staff to Republican James Sensenbrenner, Jr., who chairs the House Committee on the Judiciary, made $126,000. The chief of staff to the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, made $100,696.

Smith makes the same as House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s chief of staff and more than Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert’s chief of staff, whose salary is set by law.

The maximum salary for any committee staff member is $156,600, which would make Smith tied with the highest paid staffers in the House. All House staff salaries are calculated quarterly.

Smith is alleged to have lived with Dreier by several individuals, one of whom was the Democratic challenger to the congressman in 1998 and 2000. Dr. Janice Nelson said that she had been aware that Dreier was living with his chief of staff during the 2000 election but had opted to keep the matter private.

“All I wanted to do was work on healthcare and local issues,” Nelson said.

She came forward only after reading an article on RAW STORY which alleged that local newspapers had told reporters that they would be fired if they asked Dreier about his sexuality and/or public policy issues relating to sexuality. Dreier has voted against nearly all gay rights measures that have passed through Congress, including a measure to strip the courts of jurisdiction on gay marriage.

RAW STORY is in the process of comparing Smith’s salary to numerous other prominent staffers on the House payroll, and examining other records that have come into its possesion.

"Republican" is not a religious tenet. It's a political party, which means it's a coalition of people who decided to work for a common goal, i.e. control of legislative and executive and judicial nominations to further their agendas.

You don't have to be a fundamentalist Christian to be a Republican.

Mike Rogers decided to change targets from Ed Koch to Congressman Dreier...yet Rogers admits that he does not have enough evidence to back up the case. That did not stop him, however, from apparently pitching the story to "major news outlets" including Hustler.

LA Radio shock jocks John and Ken are targeting Dreier in the "Political Human Sacrifice" because of his support for President Bush's immigration policies (anyone thinking a Dreier outing might put him at a competitive disadvantage might check out this picture of his opponent, Cynthia Matthews, a female, "heavy equipment operator" who doesn't appear to be married either).

I think there's a reason that Karl Rove is concerned about the 4 million evangelists that stayed home in 2004.

The whacky extreme rightwing is a small faction in GOP politics and makes no real difference in elections. Christian Conservatives, AKA. The Religious Right, constitutes about 1-in-5 voters and about 75% vote straight GOP. And remember Howlin, the CIC is a member of the Christian Conservative movement.

He is hypocritical for not letting voters have the full picture on how he might vote.

Are you more aware of how he might vote than his own constituents?

I have watched your posts for years, and one thing I can say for sure, you are more of an "anti-Democrat" than you are a "true" Republican.

Does that make you feel all puffed up and superior to post crap like that?

The Republican Party has changed -- and obviously you don't like it.

Perhaps not, but it certainly helps.

It's also a bigtime cure for RINO syndrome...

The problem is that Dreier is a RINO

As Chairman of the House Rules Committee, a VERY important job, he has done a great job.

He's one of the top 5 GOP leaders in the House.

They do a lot better job that the Senate, the black hole of good ideas(if they're Republican ideas anyway).
