Poor, black, and left behind by arrogant Democratic Party
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 09/26/04 | Mike Davis

The evacuation of New Orleans in the face of Hurricane Ivan looked sinisterly like Strom Thurmond's version of the Rapture. Affluent white people fled the Big Easy in their SUVs, while the old and car-less, mainly black, were left behind in their below-sea-level shotgun shacks and aging tenements to face the watery wrath.

New Orleans had spent decades preparing for inevitable submersion by the storm surge of a Class 5 hurricane. Civil defense officials conceded they had 10,000 body bags on hand to deal with the worst-case scenario. But no one seemed to have bothered to devise a plan to evacuate the city's poorest or most infirm residents.

The day before the hurricane hit the Gulf Coast, New Orleans' daily, the Times-Picayune, ran an alarming story about the "large group ... mostly concentrated in poorer neighborhoods" who wanted to evacuate but couldn't.

Only at the last moment, with winds churning Lake Pontchartrain, did Mayor Ray Nagin reluctantly open the Louisiana Superdome and a few schools to desperate residents.

"Only at the last moment, with winds churning Lake Pontchartrain, did Mayor Ray Nagin reluctantly open the Louisiana Superdome and a few schools to desperate residents."

That's exactly WHEN the mayor SHOULD HAVE OPENED the shelter. I've been through hurricanes in public shelters -- and it ISN'T PRETTY. There no reason to have a shelter open BEFORE it is needed. It's bad enough for the duration of the storm.

This is a silly article. The mayor acted responsibly.

Everyone knew the Superdome would eventually be opened up. It was just a matter of time.

Also apparently some poor black person found a car because one was driving down the shoulder of Chef Menteur Hwy to get past the line waiting at a red light. Nearly hit me if I wasn't looking to my left.

First sentence of the article, also where I stopped reading.

I don't care to read an article with this in the very first sentence. Not only does it show what a total idiot the author is, he/she/it is also ignorant about the South.

Is this the same Stalinist Mike Davis that wrote a book praising the illegal alien takeover of LA, then took his MacArthur grant and moved to Hawaii? That same friend of the working man?

While Condoleezza Rice hovers, a tight-lipped and constant presence at Dubya's side, the highest-ranking, self-proclaimed African American in the Kerry camp is Teresa Heinz (born and raised in white colonial privilege). This crude joke has been compounded by Kerry's reluctance to mobilize black voters.

So why be loyal?

You guys should read the entire article. It's not only informative but fun to watch the democratic party eat it's own. The author screams for the party leadership to get the black vote back on the plantation (my words). The article is not about the hurricane. It is, like most liberal articles, a call for unity no matter what the issue for the purpose of defeating the President. The author basically calls Kerry an ignorant blue blood with no sense, but still wants him to win.

Yeya! The GOP storm is going to storm the entire United States of America, leaving in it's wake a solid red. (I hope, I hope, I hope)

This is one of the most offensive, blatently racist articles I've ever written. With the possible exception of a white supremecist pamphlet I once found.

I forced myself to read the whole thing and like forcing myself to eat what's good for me, I'm healthier for it. It is sheer lunacy (no, not eating what's good for you) - this clown is delusional, not only about the evil Republicans, which is expected, but also about his beloved RAT Party.

"I thought they said this was untrue."

Probably. Wouldn't stop a good liberal news-hack, though.

"On the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the United States seems to have returned to zero degree of moral concern for the descendants of slavery and segregation."

This guy's amazing--he can see ten years into the future like it was yesterday!

Just how would the writer know Strom Thurmond's vision of the Rapture? Since when is 2004 the "50th" anniversary of the Civil Rights Act?...it's actually the 40th.

What is correct here is that Demoncrats have long taken Blacks for granted. Americans with enhanced melanin pigmentation, and whose ancestors hail from the African continent, are the modern day political equivalent of the old days slaves of "Massa's" plantations. Blacks continue to pull the levers for Demoncrats, despite the fatc that in the decades of their support for the evil party, they still have a high rate of unemployment, incarceration, disease, out of wedlock children, drug and alcohol abuse, high death rates from violence and heart disease, Black schools are cesspools of illiteracy and high dropout rates. The list goes on.

The large number of Black politicians of high profile in the Evil party still do not get serious notice in national elections. When was the last Black Demoncrat candidate for President or Vice President? How many of the rich Black Liberals live in Harlem or Watts? The Evil party has sunk so low as to have a house Black of the Evil party declare a lily-white, adulterous, coke-snorting, draft-dodger declared "America's First Black President". More insulting, that "Black" president's "hero" was a rabid segregationist!!

To those Blacks who are visiting FreeRepublic, I ask you....What good has your submission to the modern Demoncrat "crackers" done for you and your people? In all the decades of subservience to the Demoncrats, are you happy with the conditions that millions of Black Americans must live under? When was the last time Jesse Jackson or Kwesi Mfume given you a much needed ride to the grocery store or the nearest health clinic?

Admit it. The Demoncrats have used you like a docile fieldhand and have only given you voice every election cycle. That's it. They've taught you that you cannot succeed on your own, by your own guts and will to excel. They've convinced you that you cannot think for yourself and you are nothing without the Liberal White guys taking you by the hand and telling you what to do, how to do it and when to do it. To you Black men who still submit to the Evil party, where is your manhood? Where is your independence and in what condition is your self esteem? And, by the way, why do the so-called leaders of your "race" continue to portray you as unable to stand as an integrated community within the greater American experience?

"Poor, Black and left behind by an arrogant Democrat Party"?

Nah. You're not "left behind". You're right where they want you: still shackled and still looking to the Massa for your survival.
