WASHINGTON As you read this story, about 10,000 people in the United States are being forced to work against their will under threat of violence, according to a new report.
"Hidden Slaves: Forced Labor in the United States," released yesterday by the Human Rights Center at University of California, Berkeley, and a Washington-based nonprofit group called Free the Slaves, was based on interviews with social service providers, government officials, and labor advocates, as well as newspaper stories published between 1998-2003 that described incidents of forced labor.
One of eight cases explored in the report concerned Lakireddy Bali Reddy, the Berkeley landlord and restaurateur sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison in 2001 for smuggling teen-age girls from India for sex and cheap labor.
Reddy came under investigation in 1999 after a 17-year old girl died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a Berkeley apartment he owned. Reddy was also ordered to pay $2 million in restitution, and the report said a civil suit associated with the case was settled in April for $8.9 million.
Researchers found that almost half of forced laborers are in prostitution or the sex industry, close to a third are domestic workers, and one in 10 works in agriculture. And while examples of forced labor have been found in at least 90 cities in the United States, most are concentrated in states with large immigrant populations like California, Florida, New York and Texas.
Researchers found that victims of forced labor come from at least 38 countries, but most are from China, Mexico and Vietnam. Some are born in the United States.
The report urged increased public awareness about human trafficking, increasing monitoring of workers in sectors where forced labor is prevalent, and ensuring that victims have adequate social services when they escape.
One way to curb this. Kill slavers. I got no problem with that.
Where's the outrage for modern day slavery? I keep hearing reparations for slavery from the 18th to 19th century.
Ok.... If you (MSM) found these problems, why haven't you called the cops or the FBI?
Oh... Silly me.... the STORY is more important than actually DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
What a bunch of clymers.
There is not a country on the face of the earth, that doesn't have the same problem. Here in Germany...a significant number of Ukrainian women are brought in for the sex trade business. They have their passports taken by the pimp...and told to earn a certain amount of money before they are "released"...which is usually two to four years of work. The Ukrainian women all thought they were going to be waitress-types or cleaning women...and earn a decent amount of money to make them rich back in the Ukrain. You have the same problem in Italy, France, and UK. There is nothing new about this.
How come Clinton didn't put a stop to this? I thought life was nirvana under Clinton?

I agree. Slavery will be a problem as long as there are slavers. Eliminate the slavers, and I mean their customers also. We do exterminate rats still.
Seems like our wonderful legal immigrants are making slaves of illegal immigrants because there's big bucks in it. Sex slaves. Prostitutes and other slavery.
They have it here in Korea too. Understand it is common in Japan too. It seems predominately using those from the old Soviet bloc countries and the Phillipines. The Korean government has turned a blind eye to it in the past, but now seems to be doing something about it.
Funny thing is, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other race hustlers are silent about it.
Funny thing is, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other race hustlers are silent about it.
Silly you. Don't you realize there is no money to be made for them in this matter?
Those race hustlers care is money and power.
When UC of Bezerkly is involved in ANY type of study one can pi$$ on it; ain't worth the paper and/or bandwidth reported on it!
Last Saturday I wanted to go ride my dirt bike in the mountains with my band of brothers.
To me this is the ultimate example of freedom.
As it turns out My boss scheduled me to work in a capitalist icon....a BP oil refinery, and since I am the only one of 23 employees with the site specific safety training, current drug testing, and security clearance for this job , I was forced , against my will to submit to the extreme duress of slavery like conditions.
I was subjected to endure the harsh agony of 10 hours, operating heavy equipmentwith only 6 hours sleep at Local 12 union scale ( time and a half all day ...$47.50 per hour).
Now my time on this earth is more precious to me than any wage ....
So I wish to register my complaint to the UN and Nelson Mandella .... Please release me from this capitalistic tyrany.......
Because it is much easier to dwell in a murky past than it is to confront the harsh realities of the present.
