Political "winds"... Good question...
Regardless that this is a "100 year Hurricane Season", Dems and Libs will do their best to take advantage of the destruction and tragedy in Florida..
Do Recall.. JANET RENO MADE A NAME FOR HERSELF DURING HURRICANE ANDREW..
The political climate will depend heavily on State and Federal aid getting in there quickly, and effectively..
Looting and other crimes will have to be dealt with "hard and fast", and some people's "feelings" may be hurt...
But in the final analysis, perception of "republicans" will depend much on how important Jeb Bush and G.W.Bush get life "back to normal" in Florida..
Any slacking on that agenda could very well cost Bush the entire state in November..

But has response been good so far? How is FEMA doing? What's the general buzz?

This could be a little more serious then that. There has been a lot of talk about a housing bubble over the last couple of years, and one has to wonder whether these storms may prove to be the pin that burst the bubble.
In the aftermath, as people clean up and pick up, the insurance rates will climb, and that much more stress will be loaded onto the system. A collapse in Florda's bloated real estate market, can underscore the achilles heal of the financial system, and lead to a further and broader weakening. So we can hope that care will be taken to protect lives and property, not only from the storm; but, also from the fallout of these storms.

Unlike hurricane Andrew in 1992, both FL Governor Jeb Bush and President Bush already have all the resources and paperwork already completed to get help to any areas affected by hurricane Jeanne as soon as possible. What made the problem with Andrew so bad was the fact that then-Governor Lawton Chiles delayed asking for Federal assistance, which really caused all kinds of problems for relief in the Homestead area.
