Sir Paul McCartney has urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to ban the French delicacy foie gras.
The former Beatle appealed to Mr Schwarzenegger in a letter to make California the first state to ban the pate made from geese and duck livers.
Other stars, including Martin Sheen, Kim Basinger and Chrissie Hynde, also urged him to approve a bill to outlaw the sale and production of foie gras
Foie Gras is made by force-feeding the birds to expand their livers.
Sir Paul was asked to write the letter by animal rights group Viva!-USA.
He said: "As you probably know, the public has clearly demonstrated that it supports a ban on this inhumane practice.
"There is clearly nothing humane about mechanically inducing disease in a bird by forcing a pipe down its throat and making it consume such an abnormal quantity of food that its liver expands many times its normal size."
Last month, California's state legislature approved a bill that would outlaw the sale and production of foie gras.
'Cruelty'
The bill is now sitting on Mr Schwarzenegger's desk awaiting his assent.
Sir Paul added: "I feel sure that your natural feelings of compassion will encourage you to sign this basic humane bill into law."
In a separate letter, celebrities including Casey Affleck, Ally Sheedy and Christina Applegate, also urged him to enact the bill.
"It is wrong to subject animals to this kind of cruelty to produce a luxury food item," they said.
Da-yum! Let's fire up the barbeque!
I'll bet Sir Paul is equally horrified by partial birth abortion. Anyone have the copy of the letter he sent to the President asking for that to be banned???
My friend from France made some for Thanksgiving a few years ago. It was weird tasting, but I ate it anyway since he prepared it from scratch rather than just going to the local gourmet place.
Can't say I'd ever go out of my way to buy it. But then, I put mustard on my fries ...
I think he needs a hobby or something.
Exactly. I think force feeding animal is cruel too, but we're in a war, babies are being aborted, Sudan, Rawanda....WTF is he thinking?
Why am I feeling this craving for veal parmesan?
Heathen!
It is a delicious product, and constitutes a growing industry in California. The rest of the ducks are used as well--and sent throughout the country and are featured in local restaurants there. If you don't like how it's produced don't eat it. But don't shut down this valuable industry and then moan about unemployment.
Notice that Paul didn't ask Jacques Chiraq to ban it, because he knows that the French won't surrender when it comes to food.
Force-feeding geese is pretty horrible, but I just can't bear the thought of THK throwing another public fit. My solution would be to stop abusing geese and just take Michael Moore's liver. That ought to keep Te-RAY-za covered at least until the end of the campaign.
What should we expect. Its french. Ewwwwwwwwwwww.
This thread is bringing out the "I don't like it, so let's ban it" wing of Free Republic.
Let's not run around banning things simply because we can get 51% of the people to agree they don't want it, shall we? Not many good outcomes once you head down that road.
And for those who think this is terribly inhumane, why not head out to a fois gras farm and check it out. They have such farms in upstate New York. It's not quite what "Sir Paul" depicts.
Taking PETA's word on animal cruelty is slightly more stupid than taking Michael Moore's word on Iraq.
>> Heathen!
Hee hee, yes I know. But I know a few other FReepers who also like mustard on their fries.

Oooh, veal, one of my favorites. Actually, authentic Italian cuisine is making a huge comeback here in NYC. Nobody does veal like the Italians.
My favorite so far: At Il Nido, on 53rd Street, they serve three pieces of veal pounded very thin, then topped with sliced roasted red peppers and asparagus, then a layer of shaved parmesan cheese, and broiled in a hot oven.
With a side of fresh homemade pasta, this dish is about as good as it gets.
Il Palazzo on Mulberry Street in Little Italy also serves a wonderful veal.
(Can you tell I've not had lunch yet?!)
Like caviar, it is a bit of a bizarre concept the first time you try it, but it is an acquired taste. It is one of my favorite things in the world to eat. Like pate, only more so.
No kidding - the same lefties are openly opposed to the WOT - a direct threat to not only the US but the entire world.
Instead, they focus on the hugh and series issues of goose and duck liver.... What a noble cause....
Ugh
I'll bet they put A-1 Sauce on their foie gras, too!
I first saw that it is a French and thought, sure go ahead and ban it. Then I saw that the eco-terrorist group PETA is involved and thought hell no, I'm going out to buy some now.
Gonna get some Veal too.
I eat at KFC just because they rip em for the chicken they buy.
:-)
Have you ever eaten duck liver pate?
I do mustard and ketchup mixed in a goopy mess. Or mayo and kethcup.
