SEOUL — North Korea threatened Thursday to turn Japan into a "nuclear sea of fire" if the United States attacks it with nuclear weapons, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported, quoting a North Korean newspaper report.

Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of North Korea's Workers Party of Korea, said U.S. military bases in Japan would come under its attack in the event of a nuclear war.

"If the United States ignites a nuclear war, the U.S. military bases in Japan would serve as a detonating fuse to turn Japan into a nuclear sea of fire," the paper said in an article, according to Yonhap. .......... (snip)

Well, I think it is very nice of them to tell us how far their rockets can go.

You think we could get them to nuke Hollywood?

"I think you mean "Godzirra"."

Actually, in Japan, it's Gojira.

O as in Poe
E as in pea
A as in father

Just to be pedantic about it.

If NK builds nuclear weapons, Japan will build nuclear weapons. We will end up with a mini Cold War. China will defend her interests to the last North Korean and we will defend our interests to the last Japanese.

Aint nothing mini or cold about it. NK has nukes and subs. They have concrete lined cargo ships. They transport missles and weapons to pretty much anywhere. Train access to europe. They have stood nose to nose to the US for over fity years. Japan is under our protection, that's why 'they' don't need nukes, we got plenty and we will defend our interests to the last Japanese.

South Korea, much like west Berlin, would accept the responsiblity for reunification with a free North Korea.

I don't know. Are the N.Koreans even salvagable as a culture after all these years treating Kim Jong Il and his daddy as gods?

“If NK builds nuclear weapons, Japan will build nuclear weapons.”

I think it’s naïve to think that Japan isn’t tooled up to slap a nuke together in a matter of a couple of weeks, if not days. This innocent-looking part, that innocent-looking machine, a few of these over here, a few of those over there, and presto…my, my, looky what we found.

I’d do that; wouldn’t you?

Besides, NK has had nuclear warheads for years, and the Japanese know it from defectors. Heck, it was in the newspapers back in the late 80s, then disappeared, then reappeard as a big shock.

“China will defend her interests to the last North Korean and we will defend our interests to the last Japanese.”

WRT Taiwan, China has already asked us if we are willing to trade Los Angeles for Taipei (or words to that effect).

“we will defend our interests to the last Japanese.”

Which the Japanese don’t find entirely reassuring. Especially after 8 years of Clinocchio.

IMO, they are dancing on the highwire, always keeping in mind the possibility that they will need to jump into China’s camp, and the possibility that they will need their own nukes to go eyeball to eyeball with NK.

When I say “they,” of course, I am talking about real power-brokers, not figureheads like Koizumi.

No. It would be a matter of bringing the next generation up sane. There would be many incidents, as true believers reacted insanely to the smashing of all their shibboleths.

Nuclear sea of fire? Seas are cold and wet. Fire is hot and dry.

I think the NK'rs are missing a bit in the meaning-of-metaphor department.

These people eat grass to survive (even if the fat cats have more grass than normal people) - what makes you think their IRBMs would work the first time they're used?

...decentralize power, water and phone systems, overbuild hospital services...

Until recently supposedly only "militia nuts" and "warmongers" thought this way. We are a nation of proud little piggies building with straw and sticks, just look at whats happening in Florida.
