Something to Yak About - Gillespie on Phony Docs: 'Was a Crime Committed? I Think So' Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie laid it on the line Wednesday, telling reporters he thinks criminal activity is behind the bogus documents used as the peg for a Sept. 8 CBS News report smearing the president. "Was a crime committed? I believe so," said Gillespie. "Obviously, forgery is involved. But the Texas Legal Code also says it is a third degree felony if one 'makes, presents, or uses any record, document, or thing with knowledge of its falsity and with intent that it be taken as a genuine governmental record' or 'makes, presents, or uses a governmental record with knowledge of its falsity.'"
Timing Is Everything
Sometimes you lose with a queen-high straight flush; sometimes, you win with two low pair. Timing is everything, but the remarkable confluence of events leading up to the bogus docu-drama smear job on the president strains credulity. Does the Kerry campaign really expect reasonable people to think it's a coincidence that two top Kerry campaign operatives - Max Cleland and Joe Lockhart - were in touch with the source of the phony documents yet knew nothing about what was going on? You can read the chronology or download the audio of key parts of the chronology.
Kerry's Laughable Plan For Iraq
John Kerry loves to talk about "my plan" for Iraq, which today involves doing the same stuff the president has been doing all along. But on Wednesday, a key component of Kerry's me-too 'plan' turned out to be a punch line. Fox News host Linda Vester asked DNC operative Howard Wolfson to name some countries Kerry claims he would add to the coalition already fighting in Iraq and his response brought unsolicited rolls of laughter from the audience. Ya, that last link was for audio of Wolfson's laugh line.
Kerry's 'Urban Legends' Harmful to Troops
We all know that Bill Burkett has urged the Kerry campaign to get 'down and dirty' against President Bush, but couldn't John Kerry at least do it will a little bit of credibility? Seems the Gentleman from Massachusetts Wednesday told a Florida crowd it's "possible" the president will reinstate the draft. Senate Armed Services Committee member Sen. John Cornyn called Kerry's draft nonsense an "urban legend," and described Kerry's remarks as "desperate and harmful to our troops." Perhaps demoralizing US soldiers in Iraq is part of Kerry's so-called plan.
Kerry Unplugs in Four Battleground States
After spending about $15 million in AZ, AR, LA and MO this year, the Kerry campaign has decided to pull the plug on advertising in those four states. The AP notes, "Campaign advisers concluded Kerry isn't doing well enough in the states to justify the cost," of a planned $5 million buy in the final weeks of the campaign.

The Final Yak
"The centerpiece of the Kerry campaign's 'character based critique,' Boston-speak for character assassination, is based on a discredited news report that was based on the criminal activity of someone who mocked up and forged documents. What's that say for the character of the Kerry campaign?" (SOURCE: RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie, Sept. 22, 2004)
