Boston Latin is known as a school where very bright kids who can't afford the prep school route can get a great education and get into places like Harvard.

Right. Though it's a public school, it's an exam school---students have to pass a tough test and get through a rigorous admissions process in order to be admitted to it. It's the gem of the Boston public school system.
