The (Irish) Automobile Association has confirmed that European Car Free Day turned out to be the busiest day of the month so far on Dublin's roads.
Spokesman Conor Faughnan said it was ironic that bad weather conditions had resulted in a heavier traffic flow.
Ireland took part in the annual event for the fifth year. Over 1,000 European towns and cities, including 20 in Ireland, participated.
People were encouraged to explore alternative forms of transport with work colleagues and school children urged to avail of car pooling, cycling, public transport options and walking to work or school.
Many countries throughout Europe offered bus and commuter train transport for free in the hope of encouraging drivers out from behind the steering wheel.
Dublin Bus gave away 20,000 free prepaid tickets in advance. Free Bus Éireann services were also available in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
Neither Rome nor Berlin took part this year and street closures in Paris were scaled back to largely token levels because of huge traffic jams in 2003.
this is almost as good as gore giving a global warming speech on the coldest day in new york history.
Actually, that's hilarious!
Sorry Socialist enviro-weenies!
Watch the video if you can. The 2 ladies interviewed in their cars at the end of the 2 minute piece must have been guilt tripped because their reactions are so over the top!!
Plus we need a sheep free day, it's those sheep belches that are causing all the Ozone depletion - sorry scratch that - global warming.
Blame Ireland for GLOBAL WARMING! Yeah, that's the ticket!
I thought it was cow flatulence!

fyi
Here I thought someone was giving away a free car.
ya got the words wrong ways round!!
street closures in Paris were scaled back to largely token levels because of huge traffic jams in 2003.
Caused by all those non-cars, no doubt.
Yeah, yeah, but How Are Things In Glocca Morra? < |:)~
I wonder if you got a "pass" if you were driving a yugo. They are not real cars any way ,right?
I stand corrected - thanks for the update on the latest - I wasn't fully ScareAware on that one - good to know that we're paying all those taxes for a good reason.
Do they dress up in medieval garb as well?
Assuming theese are government subsidies, shouldn't the citizens be raving mad at the squandering of taxpayer funds?
I don't think there are any Yugos in 2004 Dublin, it would be a shame worse than death in Beemerville.
Plus the govt of ireland paid people about 4 years ago - "Scappage Scheme" - not making that up - to get rid of old junkers cause there were some many foul, dangerous cars on the roads.
