Bush leads state (Wisconsin), but poll numbers vary widely (Bush up in every poll, highest +14)

Surveys in Wisconsin reflect state's crucial role in election

Reflecting a similar pattern in national surveys, a raft of new Wisconsin polls offers divergent pictures of the presidential race, from a dead heat to a burgeoning lead for George W. Bush.

According to a new statewide Badger Poll, Bush enjoys a clear advantage in Wisconsin, a state Democrats have carried since the 1980s and can ill afford to lose.

Bush not only leads Democrat John Kerry by double digits in the poll, but is viewed much more favorably by Wisconsinites and enjoys an immense advantage on the issue of terrorism.

A new ABC News poll of likely voters in Wisconsin offers similar findings. Bush holds a 10-point lead in that survey, enjoys a big edge over Kerry on handling terrorism and Iraq, and is seen by far more voters as a strong leader.

. . .

The Badger Poll, taken Sept. 15-21 by the University of Wisconsin Survey Center, interviewed 504 eligible voters. Among them, Bush led Kerry 52% to 38%, with independent Ralph Nader at 4%. The results were the same when only likely voters were questioned.

. . .

In a June Badger Poll, 36% of those surveyed had a favorable impression of Kerry and 36% had an unfavorable impression.

In the new poll, Kerry's favorable rating remained the same, but his unfavorable rating climbed to 48%.

Bush's advantages over Kerry are striking in some areas. Asked who will protect the United States from terrorism, 52% said Bush and 15% said Kerry. That margin grew over the last Badger Poll in June. Asked who has a consistent record on the issues, 46% said Bush and 16% said Kerry.

This is great news for GWB's prospects in Wisconsin.

I am skeptical of the claims by the Kerry spokesman and UW professor that the results are skewed and won't reflect the electorate on Nov. 2, respectively. I heard somewhere that since 2000, many more people are registering as Republicans, and speculate that this is due to the atrocious ordeal Gore put the country through in VoteHeist.

My personal opinion is that Kerry never energized his base, and Anybody But Bush just isn't gonna be a winning strategy.

On Wisconsin!

I'll second that!

That comment that keeps appearing about the Dems winning since the 80's? That's rank. They carried the majority in Presidential elections just four times, the last time by the slimmest of margins and as a result of widely reported voter fraud.

The GOP continues to expand on its majority in the State Legislature, the greatest it's been since Ike was in office, and has in the period-in-question held the Governor's office save for the last couple of years.

What Kerry and his kind are counting on now are the transplants they're bringing into Wisconsin.

The folks of Wisconsin are going to show this doofus the door.

The 'Rat electoral map website heralds Zogby's Sept. 17th poll showing Kerry with 50% and Bush with 48% in Wisconsin. They seem to cherry-pick the polls to show their candidate in the best light.

But they have the same day stuff up there and you just know the booze will be flowing and the cigs will be passed out and every Marquette student will be voting bout 10 times each so I doubt Bush will take it

I don't see a way Bush loses if he picks up WI. People in MN think he's got a great chance there too.

The article didn't mention Zogby's numbers. My paranthetical in the title isn't accurate (but it's not fake either). It should read "Bush up +14 in highest poll" or something like that.

Don't be to quick...I saw Phillip Morris trucking in 40 tons of cheap smokes to the DNC HQ in MAdison. Lots of bums to bribe on the 2nd.

I see so much resignation among rats and the media that the energy to commit massive vote fraud on the scale it would take to defeat Bush just isn't there.

If he's up in WI, I feel he's up in IA. I just would like for him to firm up CO and win PA in addtion to the 2000 results. Last I heard, he was up in OR as well.

Debates hold danger for Bush..but then again, has a anti-war candiate ever won. How many sitting senators have? I worry, but gota remain faithful

Yep. Remain confident. Many of the 9/12 democrats have become republicans.

Do these polls factor in Marquette students voting 25 times apiece and homeless people given cigarettes to vote for Kerry?

The only way Bush can lose now, the only thing to be hyper alert about, is truly massive election fraud. If the election is even close to fair he is going to win big.

You would think with a lead of several points, it would take voter fraud on a scale we have not seen to overcome the dem deficit. That's what I'm hoping, anyway.
