I am a freshman in high school and would like to tell everyone in the Bush camp that among my peers the draft is the #1 issue. I know the FR community is very large, so I am hoping someone in the campaign will read this. I also understand that many college students are basing their votes for John Kerry on the draft issue alone. We need to make sure that they know that it is John Kerry, not George Bush, that is more likely to impose a draft. Do not let John Kerry's baseless charge made today go unanswered. Actually, don't just answer the charge, keep bringing it up and hammer him into the ground with it! This could still be a very close election and we cannot let these young votes be decieved into voting for Kerry.
Don't worry. We will. Sit back, watch, and learn.
ditto that
Rush, are you listening?
Do your friends watch more than MTV? Rummy has been against the draft.
No Republican has proposed to bring back the draft. The only people who have proposed to bring back the draft in the last four years are Democrats (specifically Charles Rangel). The White House has responded that they don't want to bring back the draft and don't need to bring back the draft.
I agree. Bush needs to put a stop to the lies being perpetrated nation-wide regarding the draft. Bush isn't proposing a draft so why doesn't he say so?
Perhaps Bush will address it in a debate. Nonetheless, the campaign mavens are aware of it, so don't worry.
I know this phony draft issue seems alarming to those of us who know it isn't true. But really, I think most kids in their late teens and early 20's have pretty good BS detectors. (It comes from years of schooling.) I think most will see through the scare tactics okay, so I'd advice Republicans to not worry about this too much. Correct me if you feel I'm wrong.
If a college student is basing his or her decision on such total misinformation, I find it unlikely that student will even vote.
The "draft" is a policy of yesteryear.
Unless a MAJOR war breaks out, the draft costs more than it is worth. Republicans know this. DemoCraps are using it to scare younger voters, just like they scare the Greedy Geezers with the "Republicans want to starve you by taking you SocSec away.
AVNevis, you, too can make a difference, you truly can: talk to all of your friends, and tell them to talk with all of their friends, and so on, and get out the word.
Don't fall for the threats such as this that spew forth from the mouth of Komrade Kerry.
PING! Anyone know where that article is where the White House totally denies the draft?
There are all of those rumors about Bush doing drugs back in the 1970's. I think there's greater evidence that Kerry's doing drugs right now. He's hallucinating if he thinks Bush will bring back the draft.
Here is something to keep in mind.
The campaign in Afghanistan in 2001 was organized and begun in a matter of a few weeks. It was largely fought with highly-trained, professional special forces soldiers and extremely advanced weaponry.
Conscription (i.e. the draft) is a way of mobilizing, over a period of many months, what amounts to a gigantic army of unskilled and sometimes poorly-motivated infantry.
Why would the modern U.S. Armed Forces want a draft? It would take forever, and it would produce huge numbers of men who couldn't fight very well, and who had to be fed and clothed. And against whom would they fight? Our enemies are not fielding a giant infantry army.
That is why the rumors of a renewed draft are so much nonsense. Raising a giant draft army would cost a fortune and accomplish nothing. Nobody wants it, and nobody is planning it.
If I'm not mistaken, the armed services oppose the draft. If the draft were to be imposed, the cost of paying, feeding, clothing, and providing health care to every 18-20 y/o would be staggering. Furthermore, most military officers don't want to be saddled with training soldiers who are there against their will.
To your concerned friends, point out that the members of Congress who have proposed reinstituting the draft are all Democrats.
Someone should inform the poster this charge is groundless. The funny thing is its not the GOP that wants to reinstate the draft, its the Democrats. Guess who the hawks are? None other than our dear old friends Jim McDermott and Charlie Rangel.
Good post, AVNevis. Hope your new high school appreciates the jewel they got when they got you!
I'm just talking about some college students who don't watch the news and just listen to their friends and people like Comedy Central.
Kerry won't get away with this kind of fear-mongering.
It's really pathetic and sickening.
You ought to tell your peers to not be such tools.
Tell them about LBJ and the "Daisy ad".
And remind them that it's Kerry who wants to add 40,000 more active duty troops.
