Mapes was accused by the prison warden of offering to intercept a letter sent to someon at CBS by this one inmate, extract the contents and send it in a protective mailing from CBS to another inmate. Since the leters were sent as protected, the prison wouldn't be allowed to read them. Evidently the warden caught this being discussed over the phone. The warden sent an angry letter to CBS, so they knew about this.

Mapes acted as mediator between two prisoners receiving protected letters, which was against prison policy.

Story was done by FNC's Brian Wilson, not Carl Cameron. She was caught on tape working out a deal with a prisoner in CO to pass a note to another prisoner, using her position of reporter to avoid the usual security procedures that screened prisoner mail. Had her interview and communication priveleges with the prison revoked, and a letter of protest sent from the head of prisons to the CBS executive who yesterday was gushing over her integrity, claiming he had no clue that she would ever make such a mistake of judgement(so he was outed as a liar, too.)

What she did:

During telephone calls with a prisoner in a Colorado prison, she agreed to intercept mail he would send to a legal person at CBS (because the prison wouldn't read that) and she would send it from the legal department at CBS to a prisoner who is at a different location.

Apparently, he was not supposed to correspond with this guy and this was his and Mapes illegal way of circumventing the prison system.

They found out because the call was recorded and sent letters to CBS, her boss and basically forbid her from any correspondence with the prisoner again.

Are we certain this wasn't simply a prison romance?

Hard to see how either morsel of news is important.

CBS News faced new charges of journalistic impropriety on Sept. 21, 2004, a day after the network said it regretted using questionable documents in a report challenging President Bush's military service. At issue was a report in USA Today that the source of the documents had given them to CBS only after the network agreed to arrange a conversation between the source and the presidential campaign of Bush's opponent, Democratic Sen. John Kerry. News anchor Dan Rather is shown at a news conference in New York on October 18, 2001. (Peter Morgan/Reuters)

Rather -- "If the documents are not what we were led to believe, I'd like to break that story."

Boccardi is an old friend of Rather's.

Rather recently gave a glowing intro to Boccardi at a recent dinner both attended.

Mapes was the producer of the Sixty Minutes II show that interviewed the third white man involved in the dragging murder in Texas. Mapes was ordered to be held in contempt of court for not turning over the unedited tapes to the prosecutor.
