The answer is a little complex. First, it is a one party state and the Dems control all the spoils. The State is the largest employer so all the have to do is get out the state worker vote and their families. Second, MA has probably more colleges than any other place on Earth so you have a lot of Libs - students, profs, admin, current students and those who settle here after they graduate. Third, he has never had a big profile here. He really lurkers in the shadows. Fourth, good luck figuring out how to register to vote here and then finding your polling place. It ain't easy and there is a reason for that IMHO.
That somewhat explains why Kerry got blindsided by the Swiftvets - here is MA too many people think he did the "right thing" back then. He didn't realize the rest of the country disagrees. In his own mind, he is a hero for what he did when he got back and that idea got reinforced by the people around him here.
That's what's wrong with surrounding oneself with "yes" men...with the desire to either be around, or make, people into "little me's". The Rats always claim they stand for diversity....but that's just a lie. They don't want diversity. They want conformance....and they want conformance to THEIR view of the world and THEIR ideologies; they are, otherwise, the most intolerant group of people on this earth....besides the TERRORISTS.
