Statement by Secretary James A. Baker, III, Bush-Cheney '04 Debate Negotiations Team Leader and Vernon Jordan, Jr.

(title edited for length)

NEW YORK - Secretary James A. Baker, III, Bush-Cheney '04 Debate Negotiations Team Leader and Vernon Jordan, Jr. today issued the following statement:

"We are pleased to announce today that President Bush and Senator Kerry will participate in three debates.  The first debate is on Thursday, September 30 at the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida, the second is on October 8 in St. Louis, Missouri at Washington University, and the third at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona on October 13.  Vice President Cheney will debate Senator Edwards on Tuesday October 5 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

"President Bush's campaign and Senator Kerry's campaign have entered into a memorandum of understanding that will govern these debates.  A copy of that memorandum of understanding is attached.

"The September 30th debate will be on foreign policy and homeland security.  The October 8 debate will be on all subjects and the October 13 debate will be on domestic and economic policy.  The vice presidential debate will be on all topics.

"The debates will provide an opportunity for President Bush and Senator Kerry to have a serious discussion about the important issues to be decided in this election.

"We have worked to produce an agreement that will ensure a productive and fruitful exchange of ideas about the most important issues facing Americans today.

"Both President Bush and Senator Kerry are pleased with today's announcement and look forward to the debates.

"We wish to commend the Commission on Presidential Debates for its efforts on the 2004 debates."

The September 30th debate will be on foreign policy and homeland security.

Note that the first debate is on foreign policy.

Somehow I have this image of James Baker looking like the big bad wolf inviting Kerry into his chamber with the words: "All the better to set you up for the big October Surprise - Come right on in".

In October we can look forward to Tommy Franks campaigning for Bush, the start of Saddam's trial and the Libya WMD report at a minimum and if Karl Rove doesn't have something else up his sleeve I will shocked, shocked.

I don't know if you meant your post straight or with scarcasm, but I don't see where Baker did any good in these negotiations. I don't see what the President gets out of them. We still have all Democrat hack "journalists" as moderators, we still have three instead of two debates, with that stupid "town hall" one still on the schedule. And Kerry gets to demogogue on domestic issues in the last one just before the elections.

The debateagreement.pdf looks like it was created using a TYPEWRITER!!!

The fonts are Courier and Courier-Bold. (TrueType, Windows).

Is Baker trying to send a subliminal message?

Personally, I think events will outweigh the debates.
October could be one hot month for Americans.

Prior to the start of the debate, audience members
will be asked to submit their questions in writing to
the moderator. No third party, including both the
Commission and the campaigns, shall be permitted to
see the questions. The moderator shall approve and
select all questions to be posed by the audience
members to the candidates. The moderator shall ensure
that the audience members pose to the candidates an
equal number of questions on foreign policy and
homeland security on the one hand and economic and
domestic policy on the other. The moderator will
further review the questions and eliminate any
questions that the moderator deems inappropriate.

STOOOPID , Jimmy, you are old

I dont understand why more are not outraged by the deck being stacked with libs and the townhall format where obviously biased questions will be asked.

Mark it.

The first debate is the one that really matters, and it will be fought on Bush's turf. Kudos to Baker for that one!

It looks like a wide open debate as there are only so many possible questions to prepare for. Canned answers. It should be a dull affair and I still believe events in October will determine who gets elected.

They rule is that there are three debates, including townhall.

Libs are moderators and they get to decide which questions from the audience are inappropriate. Why do we always lets ourselves get setup.

Two debates would allow more time for the campaign trail and just being president.

The first debate always gets the highest level of viewership, and that debate is on a strength.

There are only so many possible questions and they can prepare for them.
Don't underestimate Baker or Bush.

Some people don't like that one, but I wonder if Kerry will be able to handle himself interacting with the commoners. It's not like Bush is going up against a schmoozer like Clinton.
