Prayer Request -- Horrible Situation in Yokosuka, Japan
Skwidd | 21 September 2004 | Skwidd

I am not an overly religious man, save for those times I find myself in a foxhole. But if anyone needs the help, support, and prayers of others, it is the man I am about to describe. If you are overly sensitive, you may want to skip this thread.

I'm not going to tell you his name; at this trying time, his privacy is important. Suffice to say, he is a sailor stationed in Yokosuka, Japan.

Recently, this man and his Japanese wife had a new baby, their third. A few days ago, after bathing the baby, the mother put the on their bed and was getting together a diaper and some clothes. As she was doing so, one of the other younger children came bounding into the room and bounced up on the bed to see what mommy was doing--innocent enough, how many times have your own children done this?

This time, however, it had tragic results. The baby fell off the bed and cracked her skull. Despite rushing her to the emergency room, the baby died that night.

This is terrible enough. But it gets worse.

A day ago, the family was at another family's home, trying to come to grips with their loss. It proved to be too much for the wife. She left the room to go to the bathroom--and instead jumped to her death from the 9th floor of the apartment building.

The man is currently under hospital care; the remaining two children are with their Japanese grandparents.

I know this sounds like some kind of horrible urban legend, or a grisly and tragic cautionary tale. I can assure you that it is not. You can probably find out who this man is if you dig hard enough, but I would ask that you do not. Merely remember him in your prayers tonight. If anyone needs help from a higher power, it is this man and his family. They have suffered and lost far too much in too short a time.

I said the prayer ... and for you as well. Bottom line, this man will nonetheless need to utterly reach deep within, and up too, for the resources he will need to Father his remaining two kids.

You, though not professing to be religious, can help as well if you pray too.

Babies do not usually fracture their skulls falling off beds--especially the very low beds they have in Japan.
Was an autopsy done on this child?

I would be worried about the safety of the other children.

Yes, I agree. Most beds in Japan are roll ups. But even so, my daughter at a 11 mo old rolled off the bed and fractured her collar bone. And that was a pretty high bed. How hard does a child have to bounce on a bed to bounce an infant completely off of it unless the baby was very very close to the edge. I could see a broke neck before a fractured skull. Accidents happen, even with my own they did. But to fracture a skull falling off a bed is a common excuse given for infanticide.

I am praying for them--it's a sad situation either way. The mother's suicide is particularly tragic.

Did this all come out of a post-partum depression?

Lord, comfort this man in his time of grief. Be with his children, especially the one who jumped on the bed.
