WASHINGTON (AFP) - The top Democratic Party official accused US President George W. Bush of lying to the American people about his National Guard service during the Vietnam War, even though CBS News said it had erred in using dubious documents about the matter.
"The American people already know that strings were pulled to get President Bush into the Guard; and while in the Guard he missed months of service and was grounded," Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a statement.
"We know that George Bush was a fortunate son, a child of privilege, who refuses to admit that he used his connections to avoid fulfilling his requirements," he continued. "But what we still don't know is why Bush didn't fulfill his duty to his country or why he has continued to lie to the American people about it."
CBS News apologized Monday for airing documents alleging that Bush's family connections had secured his assignment to a National Guard unit during the Vietnam War -- a posting that effectively spared him active duty in Vietnam.
"Based on what we now know, CBS News cannot prove that the documents are authentic, which is the only acceptable journalistic standard to justify using them in the report," CBS News President Andrew Heyward said in a statement.

Notably McAuliffe issued this statement seemingly in just minutes or so after the CBS broadcast.

Yes and Dan Rather just gave a radio interview (believe it was posted here) in which he bragged they've admitted no wrongdoing and - now that he has "apologized" - they're going back to the National Guard story to prove Bush lied.

These pea brained morons are starting to bother me. I wonder if they'll shut up after their boy and his Breck girl get their shorts handed to them in November?
I sure hope so.

I hope they do. The longer it's in the press, the harder it is to get Kerry screaming like Howard Dean any face time.
Rather has a vendetta, and he has crossed a line.
I certainly hope some of his brethren are hot on the trail of who forged these documents and their chain of command.
I'd like to see this smug bastard professionally destroyed.

Nothing Bush did in the military compares with John Fraud Kerry having his photo displayed as a North Vietnamese war hero in the War Remnants Museum in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City.

McAuliffe and the DNC really have a reason to talk, don't they? After all, their man, X42, dodged the draft and they don't seem to be perturbed about it at all! He refused to reveal his medical records and not a peep out of the democRATs.
What's the word? Reprobate? Traitor? Hypocrite?
To: dodger
We know that George Bush was a fortunate son, a child of privilege Even McAuliffe uses the old, 2000 "Fortunate Son" line. I think they might have invested a lot of money in "Fortunate Son" related ads.
They would have backfired anyway, so maybe the DNC got a break. "Fortunate Son" doesn't compare so bad to "Fortunate Husband"

I haven't had so much fun as this since 1998 when I first joined FreeRepublic when Bill Clinton was in deep trouble explaining why he was getting his pipes cleaned by an intern in the restroom next to the Oval Office.
I'm loving this.

What's this "dubious" nonsense. Is Yahoo allergic to the word "fraudulent"???
It's clear to me that Vietnam really IS the only issue the DemonRats have.
