This is another trial balloon. They're trying to avoid dismissals and recriminations by 'regretting' what happened, hoping this will go away.
Rather the opposite is needed now: what are the connections among Burkette, Van Os, Cleland, Rather, Mapes, Kerry, etc?
Acknowledging their fake is not enough.

If nothing else this really blunts any October surprise from the Dems using the National Guard.
Still open for expectation of October Suprise:
cocaine co-user or paid abortion.

In the statement, CBS said: "Burkett originally said he obtained the documents from another former Guardsman. Now he says he got them from a different source whose connection to the documents and identity CBS News has been unable to verify to this point."
WHO IS THE SOURCE IS THE QUESTION???

including the interview of Burkett by Rather. This is just another excuse for CBS to interview Burkett so he can bash Bush without a counterpoint.

CBS says, "Nous regrettons" -- and the lower masses must prostrate themselves and say, All is forgiven, we don't want to be judgmental over one error in judgement, er, despicable campaign to damage a President just before the election.
Dan must resign!

CBS is the Eye of Sauron and Dan Rather is the mouth. That would make Buckhead the courageous little Frodo: He's dropped the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, all hail the hero!

...giving her a false account of the documents' origins to protect a promise of confidentiality to the actual source." The legendary Liberal backhanded slap..."Sure, they're fake, but only because we were nobly protecting our souce from the Evil Republicans!"
I think, IMHO, the coming Bush Doc-u-dump demanded by the Liberal Judge is going to make this entire AWOL-from-the-Guard thing a moot point, so once it was ordered, Danny Boy had to find the least painful way out of the problem.

CBS News pledged "an independent review of the process by which the report was prepared and broadcast to help determine what actions need to be taken."
Suppose CBS will also find Nicole's killer?
To: Spok
Well, we can look at it this way, if there is a genuine October Surprise, old Dan will have to buy a newspaper to read about it.

"What's with the, "We will continue to work tirelessly to be worthy of that trust."? They lost what little trust they had. The statement should be "We will use our best efforts to restore your trust."

Cleland will confess for the record and be the willing criminal conspirator. Can you imagine a guy in a wheelchair, as a decorated wounded veteran who lost his limbs, paraded on the federal courthouse steps doing the frog-walk? Or would that be frog-roll?
Cleland will be the perfect culprit from a public relations stand for the DNC. He'll get no jail time due to his condition.

Dan, if you truly regret it, then don't apologize to us, apologize to President Bush. Until then, talk is cheap.

Time for Danny Boy to pick up a shovel and start preparing a permanant resting place along with CBS.

In the statement, CBS said: "Burkett originally said he obtained the documents from another former Guardsman. Now he says he got them from a different source whose connection to the documents and identity CBS News has been unable to verify to this point." I'm sorry, but this is unbelievable. CBS claimed that the sourcing for the documents gave them credence in the documents' authenticity, but now they are saying all they knew was that a "Guardsman" gave it to Burkett, a partisan Democrat. There has to be more here than meets the eye. Are we supposed to believe that CBS did not get the name of the Guardsman, and just took Burkett's word for it? Was that the overwhelming evidence for CBS's claim?
If this doesn't prove that CBS was WILLINGLY deceived about the documents, I don't know what would. Until now they have hidden the fact that a known partisan was their source, and that they treated him as if he had no axe to grind. What a crock!

Dan is saying, "Forgive me, but don't hold me to any consequences." His spinmeisters on cable are saying, "The American people are forgiving for one mistake, CBS has a long and distinguished record of reporting and should be given a pass, besides who was the source of the original document, Kark Rove?"
They don't understand that the American people can smell a snake and are only willing to give a fair shake to someone for an honest mistake, to someone who is sincerely repentent and wants to make restitution for a mistake.
