My source familiar with discussions within CBS says that the discussions of "Dan falling on his sword" have been "muttered all over the place, but there is nothing solid - so far just "rumor and speculation." However, many staffers has been told to gather around 11 a.m. for an announcement of some sort.

If he does step down, there is blood in the water, and all his controversial stories will be discussed, including 1988. No matter what, CBS needs to fire Rather if he does not agree to immediate early retirement.

Dan's a classless hack. If he falls on his sword, expect his resignation statement to go along these lines. "My fellow Americans, CBS News has determined the Killian documents are forgeries. I am sorry I unintentionally misled you about them. As an honorable man, I have no choice but to resign so that CBS News can continue to provide the highest standards of journalistic excellence. Of course, George W. Bush has also unintentionally misled the American people about Iraq. We will wait to see if he is an honorable man. Courage."

Many want to know Dan's complete (and Jennings) role in the JFK Murder.
Both went from nothingness to ..... notoriety supporting terrorists.

Wait.
I've been told by Oh Really...that nobody in Dan Rather's position..( Jennings, Brokaw, et al...) would ever do something like this.
So...this must all be a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.........

Rather:
"Have a pleasant evening and thank you for watching CBS News...Wait...someone has just handed me a note (genuflecting)...well I'm ...er...flabbergasted...
...It seems some sloppy interns behind the scenes here at CBS have perpetrated a terrible hoax upon WE -- the American people....
This dastardly deed of purposefully misinforming the Undecided Vote, er...I mean WE, the American people CANNOT be tolerated in MY newsroom!!"

I think that if he makes Burkett the fall guy, Burkett will turn on him and more info will surface.
I agree. I don't think the DNC and CBS took into considerations that they were dealing with a loon.
Burkett already has told some news organization that he contacted Max Cleland. That was never suppose to come out. Burkett is going to fold and tell all. The man thinks his story is true so he will do all he can to get his side out.

... As an honorable man, I have no choice but to resign so that CBS .....LOL---if this man who has used his job to push his own liberal agenda and candidates throughout his ENTIRE CAREER, bent on destroying American resolve to stand behind a 'republican' President in time of war and bent upon the absolute desire to crush President Bush uses the term honorable in describing himself....I will have to run for the toilet because I will be lunching it, big time.

Mapes and Rather out. That's the only way this can endAs DFU pointed out, all it would really take to end the scandal would be for CBS to be somewhat evenhanded between now and election day. Imagine the SBVfT being given the same credence as that 86-yo secretary! 'Course without the journalism wind it its back, the Kerry campaign would disappear without a trace . . .

I think CBS has wanted to get rid of Dan for some time, the rise of Fox news and the fall of CBS news has not gone unnoticed by CBS corporate. I think Dan will go and CBS news will be allowed to die a slow death. CBS can't compete and doesn't want to. Broadcast news in USA will be CNN, Fox, NBC.

The general manager at KWTX TV in Waco did about a four minute on air editorial, and said that it's "time for Rather to clean out his desk." He didn't do it at 2 AM either, but during the local news.
