Gay families: What it's like for the children
Greenwich Time ^ | September 20, 2004 | Camilla A. Herrera

Posted on 09/20/2004 7:35:35 AM PDT by Area Freeper

When Abigail Garner was in eighth grade, she confronted two classmates who repeatedly used the word "gay" to describe something as "uncool" or "dumb."

"One of them said, 'What's your problem? Is your brother gay or something?' " she recalls in her Web site, www.familieslikemine.com, a forum for teen and adult children of gay parents. "My heart started to race. 'No,' I responded. 'My dad is.' "

It was 1985, Garner remembers, a time she felt so isolated, she believed she was the only one in the world with a gay father.

"Being surrounded by 'fag' and 'lezzie' jokes on a daily basis hurt me a lot," she adds. "What hurt even more was that the same teachers who punished students for saying something racist would just ignore anti-gay comments. I knew in my mind that jokes about sexual orientation were just as bad as jokes about skin color or ethnicity, but teachers were setting a bad example. And my classmates followed."

Garner, who was 5 when her mother and father divorced and her father came out, recoiled at the homophobic comments and tasteless jokes. These influenced how little she shared about her father and partner. She was selective about her friends.

"Even so, I worried about how friends would react," she says. "I would get so nervous about it that when I would start to say it, I would begin to tremble and my eyes would fill with tears. It was not until I was in college that I could mention it as casually as other information about my life."

Garner was 22 when she first met another person with a gay parent.

one would think that the father would have thought of the imp[act on his little girl of his "coming out" before he did. but then, i forget - it isn't about the little girl, is it?

I recall one girl from my past who informed me that both of her natural parents were gay. She was one screwed up individual.

Garner, who was 5 when her mother and father divorced and her father came out, recoiled at the homophobic comments

Homophobia:
This term is probably the most outrageous invention of the "gay" sophists. the illogic of homophobia is insultingly blatant.
Originally, homophobia was psychiatric jargon invented to describe a person's fear of homosexual inclinations in him or herself. "Gay" activists simply stole the term and redefined it as "hate and/or fear of homosexuals." As a rhetorical weapon, homophobia is unequaled. It serves first to define anyone who opposes the legitimization of homosexuality as a hate-filled bigot. The universal inclusion of all opponents as homophobic is of course not emphasized. Homosexual activists publicly associate this label with violent "gay bashers" and hateful fanatics. When they use the term they want people to think about the killers of Matthew Shepard, but in conventional practice they include every man, woman and child who believes homosexuality is abnormal or wrong.

Secondly, the term defines opposition to homosexuality as a mental illness. "Gay" activists take special delight in this since it was scant decades ago that homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatry (removed by the political maneuvering of homosexual activists in a 1973 vote of the members of the American Psychiatric Association).

Thirdly, the term serves as the semantic equivalent of "racist," helping the "gay" movement to further indoctrinate the public with the notion that opposition to homosexuality is equivalent to prejudice against racial minorities.

The use of the term is in itself religious discrimination because it implicitly disparages and declares illegitimate the religious teachings of several major world religions. Adoption of the term by government constitutes a prima facie violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits the endorsement or inhibition of religion.

Discrimination:
Discrimination is a word whose political redefinition originated in the civil rights movement. In normal usage, discrimination is synonymous with discernment, but as used in a civil rights context it means irrational bias against a person. "Irrational" is the hidden qualifier in the term that distinguishes appropriate discernment from prejudice. In an enlightened society there can be no rational basis for discrimination on criteria such as race, skin color or ethnicity. However, as with multi-culturalism, the introduction of morally significant criteria changes the analysis of discrimination. Discrimination against harmful conduct is entirely rational, and in many cases necessary. Discrimination is now synonymous with racial prejudice in the public mind.

The "gay" movement has exploited this association to legitimize its own claims by adding itself to the list of minorities in anti-discrimination statutes.
Moral discrimination is "rational" discrimination.

I have a feeling that she headed west to wander the streets of Seattle mumbling to herself about the corrupt military industrial complex. Or she could simply be wearing a sea turtle suit these days.

From the article:

"Every time I hear any media or political debate about the human rights of people based on sexual orientation, or the validity of gay families, I immediately think of how the sons and daughters are processing this information," says Garner.

I think that's something we should consider. That is, children in families where one parent (or both) decide to become homosexual, those children should be considered in how and what we say on this cultural issue.

Not that we should pull any punches in condemning homosexuality (behavior), but perhaps we can better communicate by expressing sympathy for the children and mercy to the confused parents.

Homosexuality in and of itself is sick.. but condemning children to this kind of thing for their own selfish reasons is even sicker.

My Children have been using the term "GAY" in this context for the last 10 years or so. Hilarious to see the children undermine the struggle of language manipulation that the homosex sophists spent years to acomplish. LOL

Liberal propaganda notwithstanding, pedophilia is far rarer among the Catholic Clergy than the male population in general. The PC police have made this particular smear acceptable because they are opposed to Catholicism, the most pro-life, anti-gay organization on the planet.

Our kids (4 & 8-years old) don't know anything about homosexuals yet, and I don't even think they've heard the word gay. But when they are old enough we will explain it in terms they can understand.

Along with other homeschooled parents, we hope and pray that in homeschooling we can raise a new generation, a generation that can make a huge difference in this world.
