~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~

The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world."

What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word.

What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately.

What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word.

What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above.

Missing Man Formation

A flight of usually 5 aircraft in a fly-over formation. When the flight reaches the honor point, one of the aircraft peels off into a steep climb heavenward leaving his or her position vacant. In is a formal salute rendered to POW and MIA as well as to deceased military people - usually aviators.

Greetings, Canteeners, Troops,
and All the Ships at Sea!

And Happy Monday to all here, on the last official day of summer, and the threshhold of autumn!

Sarge is back in Prairie Dog Village, marking time until the official orders come in via email, that send me on my way back to Active Duty once again.

For those who missed the updates, The Boy's volleyball team won their season opener yesterday, best two of three!

Sarge is also the busy guy this week: the Writers' Club meets tonnight, and it looks liek it'll be a lot of fun! Add later, the Home Detachment's artsy stuff, the parent/teacher things, and prepping for the new mission - it'll be a busy time!

Now, on to a few Personals:

TONKIN/STAR: An other Monday Shortpeak thread, and it's a good one, too. And yes, Star, people can ask me about MIOBC - and MIOAC, as well...

BEACH: My, that's a wonderful outfit for the busy business girl! Well-dressed Canteeners shop at the House Of Spotsybelle, surely!

DOCMAN: A hearty Welcome to the Canteen, Sir, and may your stay with us be long and fun!

KATHY: Well, it looks like your kids are arguing again - Mojo wants to leave Tomkow in Egypt with the mummies. Looks like she's been reading Harry Potter - that's straight out of "Prisoner of Azkaban", that is...
