An Interview with Sue Niederer Her Son Was Told by the Recruiter He Wouldn't See Combat; Now He's Dead

Seth, 24, was in debt after he graduated from Rutgers University in 2002. He joined the army for money and skills that, he was told, would help land him a job with the CIA or FBI -- his dream jobs. "Not for patriotism," said his mother, Sue Niederer, who is now an anti-war activist. She advised her son to get the recruiter's promises in writing. When Seth asked, the recruiter told him, "Your mother wears your pants for you?"
Seth, who had no training with explosives, was assigned to find enemy remote-controlled bombs. He would then call in experts to deactivate them.
He was killed by a bomb in February 2004, after five months in Iraq. Below is a conversation with Seth's mother, Sue Niederer:...
There seems to be no end to the anti-war activists, who are eager to dance on the graves of their children for a little publicity.
The recruiter's job is simply to get the recruit to join. After that, he will never see that recruit again. As a result, it's sad but true that some recruiters (not all) will flat-out lie to a recruit. Whatever happens to the recruit down the road doesn't matter, because he has already improved the recruiter's numbers.
That being said, I still find it hard to believe that any Army recruiter would guarantee a recruit that he would never see combat as a soldier. That's so much of a stretch as to be ludicrous. And given the fact that we are hearing this from Ms. Niederer, who we know is a Code Pink sympathizer and not very stable at the moment, I don't find it that trustworthy.
If that happened, she'd blame Bush and say he didn't do enough to keep us safe -- or his war in Iraq caused it.

(Interviewer) When did your son join the military? Why did he join? (S.N.) "June 2002, right after he graduated college...." (interviewer) How long did he serve for before going to Iraq? (S.N.) "Nothing. He had just finished training at end of July. He went to Fort Drum on Monday. They told him on Tuesday, you're gone, you're out...."
Surely you don't think the whacko, grieving, anti-war (from before it started) mother wouldn't tell the truth, do you? /sarcasm>
She makes it sound like July 2002 (Impossible! The war hadn't been launched yet!) he was shipped to Iraq, with (barely) 6 weeks Basic, when he actually shipped a year later with mucho training.
Guess she also doesn't think she and her hubby should have helped pay for his college; only his "cheapskate father" was supposed to contribute? She made it sound like her CURRENT husband was his father, and wouldn't pay.
This piece of work looks worse, and less deserving of any kind of 'grieving parent'consideration, the more I find out about her.

Needless to say he did have these comment in the second post:
"I don’t feel [Seth] died in vain," he said. "He knew what he was doing when he went in." He added that if the troops were pulled out before rebuilding the country, then he would feel his son died in vain.
Sympathy, she justly deserves,for She is a Mother who has lost a son, in this war against terrorism.
It is impossible to believe that anyone who chose to enlist in the Military, for the Educational opportunities and other bennies, could be naive enough to expect a guarantee that they would never be asked to put their life on the line. Risky business is what it's all about, and preparation for going into harms way, is what all the training is about, and what warriors are paid for.
As for the Mother being anti-war,isn't everyone? The United States didn't go out looking to start a war-the deranged, spiteful, suicidal idiots of the most radical fringe of a radical cult, brought the war to us.
We all grieve along with Sue over the loss of her precious son, and for all the other lost loved ones of so very many. But being against this war on terrorism is not going to make it go away. It's here, and the only way to make it disappear, is to kill every sonovabitch responsible for giving birth to this insane reign of fear.
We also had a movie industry that supported the war, sold war bonds, many joined to serve and if they couldn't they helped out at the USO and entertaining troups. Now we have a bunch of anti-war, Socialistic examples for our young.
Having dealt with recruiters in my past I know they tell you all sorts of stuff. Luckily I had a teacher in school (jrROTC) who was a Major in the air force and he set me straight on a large number of things.
That of course was when I was 17. At 24 years old and graduated from college he could not have been so duped into believing that.
and, didn't she state she tried her best to talk him out of joining? Soooo she is probably angry at him and taking it out on a President she didn't vote for and didn't like before she lost her son.
Daddy is a cheap screw - or he knew his kid better than his other half.

I did seven years and suggest everyone send an empty envelope to their bogus scholarship fund (mommy and daddy don't need the new BMW that much).
NOTE: The first thing they do in the official CIA preparatory course at Fort Benning is GIVE YOU A RIFLE, the second thing they do is TELL YOU YOU'RE GOING TO BE SHOT AT....it don't take a college degree to figure those clues out.
True, he was old enough to make his own decisions and be responsible for them. It was so infuriating when Michael Moore kept asking Bill O'Reilly if he would sacrifice his "child" for the war in Iraq and O'Reilly skirted the question, because the answer is, like it or not, these soldiers are not children - they are grown men and women who choose to enlist. A little wet behind the ears to be sure, but old enough to legally walk their own path.
That said, I have a hard time condemning any woman who has lost a son, because I can't even imagine losing mine and how I might deal with it. Maybe I'd go a bit crazy too. So she has my heartfelt sympathy and prayers even though I may vehemently disagree with her subsequent actions and political positions.

Losing a child is one of those things that makes people go mad, and the rest of us look the other way.
It's the decent thing to do. Really.
Just look the other way. She's suffering a world of pain that most of us cannot imagine.
Have some decency.
What was she active in? I searched for older links on her and only found one entry, and that was for when she went to some community meeting about a run-of-the-mill real estate issue.
I think it would be important to prove her longtime radicalism, as Nancy Lessin, the spokesperson for MFSO (military families speak out) is a LONGTIME radical activist whose son was killed in Iraq and is cynically playing the bereaved mother game.
Perhaps the talk show you were referring to was discussing Lessin and not Niederer? Lessin and Niederer can usually be found in the same place these days. )-:
Was it Seth's biological father, the former New Brunswick cop, or was it Niederer's current husband, who is just as loopy as she is.
Interesting. From what I'm hearing, somebody is spinning this for some reason. But why? I can't imagine the Republicans doing it, since it's to their advantage to isolate the psycho Mom as a psycho, and not impugn the rest of the family. And the Demonrats have no incentive to do it, because the nutcase is on their side of the issue. So where is the malicious propaganda coming from?

So it looks like I got the right guy but then again there are a lot of New Brunswick cops (its a college town with way too many homeless... sort of a mini San Fran).
I'm willing to let this poor lady vent. I wouldn't wish something like this on my worst enemy.
What is beyond the pale are the DU-types who are using this woman's grief and lashing-out to further their own ends
