That's why Left is reelin'!!"

Awesome Mud.

What do you think of Springsteen? I was never a big fan of his... I understand why people got into his tunes... But I always thought him a bit over rated. Now I think he is a misguided at best. Too bad. How about Cat? I always liked a few of Cat's tunes.

It is difficult to think of enjoying his music now tho.....They should have gotten this book:

"Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation offers hunting opportunities statewide"

"Lands managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation offer the outdoorsman a variety of hunting opportunities, including several lottery and reservation-only hunts as well as open hunting throughout the season. These opportunities assist the department in managing the wildlife population on these lands. Applications are being accepted for lottery hunts at Kiptopeke State Park and Savage Neck Natural Area Preserve, in Northampton County, and for Grayson Highlands State Park in Grayson County. Kiptopeke will hold muzzleloading hunts Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 and shotgun hunts on Dec. 3-4. The Savage Neck hunt, in which only youths can hunt, will be Nov. 20. The application deadline for the Kiptopeke muzzleloader hunt is Oct. 1 and Nov. 5 for the shotgun hunt, and applications for the Savage Neck youth hunt are due Oct. 16. The Savage Neck hunt on Nov. 20 is open only to young people ages 12–17. Youths 16-17 may hunt alone, and those 12–15 must have a non-hunting adult accompany them.

A second lottery hunt will be held at Savage Neck Dec. 6-11 and Dec. 13-18. The application deadline is Oct. 8. Successful applicants will have the option to purchase up to five permits for their hunt day, allowing each hunter to form a party consisting of themselves and up to four other hunters. Grayson Highlands State Park will hold muzzleloading hunts on Nov. 9 and Nov. 11, and rifle hunts on Nov. 16 and Nov. 18. The registration deadline for both is Sept. 24."

Each lottery requires a separate application. Call 1-800-933-PARK for an application or download one from www.dcr.virginia.gov. Applications and a $5 application fee must be received by the designated deadlines. A waterfowl hunt will be held at Dameron Marsh Natural Area Preserve in Northumberland County, Nov. 23 and 30, Dec. 14, 21, and 28, 2004, and Jan. 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2005. Hunters will be chosen in a random drawing, and the application deadline is Oct. 15, 2004. Call (804) 786-7951 or visit www.dcr.virginia.gov. for a complete set of rules and an application for this hunt only. Participants must be at least 16 years old, or 12-15 years old and accompanied by a non-hunting adult. Both must have proof of successfully completing a hunter education course. Hunters can reserve stands or zones on a first-come, first-served basis at the following hunts:

Muzzleloading and archery hunts at York River State Park, in James City County, Nov. 8 – 9 and Nov. 11 - 12, the reservation period begins Sept. 17; Smith Mountain Lake State Park, in Bedford County, Nov. 3–6, the reservation period begins Sept. 15; and James River State Park, in Buckingham County, Nov. 8 – 10, and Nov. 15 - 18, the reservation period begins Sept. 8. Muzzleloading-only hunts will be held at Caledon Natural Area, in King George County, Nov. 3-5, and the reservation period begins Sept. 29. Shotgun hunts will be held at Chippokes Plantation State Park, in Surry County, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, the reservation period begins Sept. 8; James River State Park, Nov. 29 – 30, Dec. 1 – 2, Dec. 13 – 16 and Dec. 29 - 30, the reservation period begins Sept. 8; York River State Park, Dec. 9 - 10, the reservation period begins Sept. 17. Hunters may reserve preferred days and stands or zones for an advanced fee of $15 a day by calling the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center, 1-800-933-PARK. Reservations will be accepted until all slots are taken at each hunt up until two days prior to the hunt, provided that the hunter can complete the payment before the day of the hunt. Open hunting is offered in designated areas of five state parks: Fairy Stone in Patrick and Henry counties; Grayson Highlands in Grayson County; Hungry Mother in Smyth County; Occoneechee in Mecklenburg County; and Pocahontas in Chesterfield County. Chippokes Plantation State Park offers a special Southern Heritage Deer Hunt Saturday, Nov. 20, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. This traditional 19th century hunt features three southern meals, a blessing of the hounds and more. The cost is $325 per adult, $200 for children 12-17 and $50 for non-hunting companions. Reservations are required and may be made through Nov. 18 by calling the reservation center. Overnight accommodations are available to registered hunters by calling the park at (757) 294-3625. "Awesome Mud."

Thank you, my FRiend.

"What do you think of Springsteen? I was never a big fan of his... I understand why people got into his tunes... But I always thought him a bit over rated. Now I think he is a misguided at best."

I've admitted previously on Black that the Boss usedta be one of my FAVES of all time, but I never liked him for his politics before, although I'm more-inclined to dislike him for his politics now. I like to think he IS misguided, but I do not think you can discount the possibility that the dude's only doing this to jump-start a career that continues to go downhill. I still like his music, though, and since I get to transform his words anyway, it just makes it that much funner to be able to jab another Lib'ral DOLT in the eye.

"How about Cat? I always liked a few of Cat's tunes. It is difficult to think of enjoying his music now tho..."

Heh heh heh...actually, I'm just the opposite regarding Yusef Islam. I've never really sat back and listened to Cat Stevens before this week, then, after hearing about his "deportation", I borrowed a CD from a friend and have been listening to him quite a bit. I've FReeped one of his songs and reckon I can parody another couple.

Heeeheee... The ultimate justice! Freeped tunes! I do give Bruce credit for speaking to his audience! The Boss was great for a time when Disco depressed the masses of our country. I do believe he helped save rock and roll. Altho- I do like some disco- I was very young in the 70's so I didn't really have to live thru it. I don't want to ruin his career I just hope no one is listening him!

He has a right to sing about what moves him- but I wish these people would understand that they do not understand the finer points from watching CNN and reading the LA Times!!!

Cat,OTH, should know better. He is aiding our enemy in concrete ways.... Not at all cool! I can not forgive him, and I won't.

"Canty Will be Missed -- But How Much?"
by John Galinsky
Sep 28, 2004

Al Groh accurately described Chris Canty as among the most enthusiastic, energetic, intense and passionate members of Virginia's football team. Unfortunately, he also was among the most indispensable. On defense, anyway, Canty may have been the one guy the Cavaliers could least afford to lose. Which is why his season-ending knee injury is such a big downer for a team that seemed destined for great things this season. That's not to say those hopes and dreams are dashed. Far from it. But losing a great player sure makes it tougher to achieve greatness.

And make no mistake, Canty had turned himself into a great player. His rise from lightly-regarded recruit to coveted NFL prospect was one of the best individual stories about Virginia football. It was a testament to his potential, his hard work and the program's emphasis on player development. Canty came to UVa looking like a basketball player - he played just two years of high school football - and transformed himself into a 6-7, 290-pound terror. For Canty, it was never easy. He broke a leg in the spring of 2002, then dislocated an elbow that season against Virginia Tech. He fought through other injuries and made the All-ACC second team in both 2002 and 2003. Finally, he got through a spring and summer in good health. And this season he was making the next step toward becoming a truly dominant defensive end.

Dennis Haley tries to comfort Canty after his injury. With 30 tackles, seven behind the line, Canty was the most consistently disruptive member of Virginia's defense in the first four games. Who can forget his play in the first quarter against Temple when he forced quarterback Walter Washington to lob a screen pass over his extended arms, then tackled the receiver for a two-yard loss? Against North Carolina, he helped drop tailback Ronnie McGill for a one-yard loss on fourth down at the UVa 2 on a pivotal early goal-line stand. He was the linchpin of the defensive effort against Akron, making 10 tackles (three for a loss) in the shutout, then recorded seven tackles against Syracuse before his fourth-quarter injury.

How significant is his loss? In my opinion, there are only two other players with comparable talent on UVa's defense: Ahmad Brooks and Darryl Blackstock. Both would be equally difficult to replace, but there is better depth at linebacker than defensive end. Kwakou Robinson is a capable run stopper, but he doesn't have the speed and athletic ability to control the edge, rush the passer and blow up plays like Canty. Canty also was a wonderful captain whose teammates fed off his exuberance. Emotionally, he was the heart of the defense. So his absence will be a big blow. Some posters on the message boards have called it “devastating” and “disastrous.” I wouldn't go quite that far, but it's not going to be the same defense without him.

"A cold, hard analysis lends itself to this conclusion: Without Canty, the defensive line goes from very good to fairly ordinary. The pass rush will suffer. So will run support. Brennan Schmidt, in his third season as the starting end opposite Canty, told me last week how amazed he was by plays Canty made in every practice, not to mention in games. There were many times when opponents ran to Schmidt's side of the field only to have Canty chase down the ball carrier from behind. “You just don't see many guys his size doing the kind of things he does,” Schmidt said.

Canty was on his way to a monster senior season. That's why seeing Canty helped off the field last Saturday, unable to put any weight on his left leg, had to leave the Cavaliers feeling sick despite their win over the Orange. For UVa fans, it was also an all-too-common sight. It doesn't take a long memory to think of marquee Wahoos who have gone down with injuries. There was Anthony Poindexter in 1998, Antwoine Womack in 2001, Kevin Bailey in 2002 and Matt Schaub in 2003. With the exception of Bailey, all of those injuries adversely affected Virginia's fortunes on the field. The Cavs gave up nearly twice as many points per game after Poindexter's injury as they did before it - 28.4 ppg after, 15.0 ppg before. UVa had almost no running game without Womack, who tore ankle ligaments in the 2001 opener, and finished 5-7. Everyone remembers what happened at South Carolina after Schaub was sidelined by a separated shoulder last year. The Cavaliers also have a checkered history of playing without Canty. They started 0-2 as he recovered from the broken leg in 2002, then won eight of 11 once he returned to the lineup. He missed the bowl game that year, though UVa crushed West Virginia without him.

Still, I don't think Virginia will go into a tailspin now that Canty's career is over. For one thing, this team is too good. Brooks and Blackstock are still around. So are Andrew Hoffman, Elton Brown, Wali Lundy, Heath Miller, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Marques Hagans - all legit All-ACC candidates. Previous UVa teams didn't have this much talent and thus could ill afford the loss of a star player. This team should be able to handle that circumstance a little better. We'll see.

Canty's warm personality made him a fan favorite. On a personal level, I feel worse for Canty than I do about the team's prospects. He was an easy player to root for. Along with Blackstock and Alvin Pearman, he was my favorite Cavalier to interview. He always made himself accessible to the media and he was “a great quote,” as reporters like to say. He could fill up a notebook, yet he was a rarity - a big talker who didn't come across as conceited, self-absorbed or phony. On the contrary, he struck me as gregarious and genuine, funny and happy. He talked about how much he enjoyed playing football, and he showed it every time he took the field. He always looked like he was having fun, and fans embraced him for it. His teammates and coaches also seemed to like and admire him for more than just his talent.

In that respect, this whole situation reminds me of what happened to Poindexter six years ago. I don't know if Canty's injury is as severe, or how much of an impact it will have on his football future, but the same thought crosses my mind: What a shame. What a shame that his collegiate career had to end like that. What a shame that he won't be a part of whatever the Cavaliers accomplish the rest of the year (other than his presence as an off-field leader, which still could be significant). What a shame that he won't get a chance to be an All-American, or even first-team All-ACC, because he was denied a monster senior season.

Hey, football's not fair. Everyone who plays the sport knows that. These things happen, and not just to Wahoos. But like Dex, Chris Canty deserved better. As someone who brought so much joy to Virginia's football program, he deserved a happier ending than this."

Whatta shame...Canty's a MONSTER!!

We must fight now fer less Guv'ment...

Well, I voted once fer Dubyuh...

But I'm startin' to feel like a fool...

So when it's time to vote next Autumn...
My support it shan't come cheap...
Bush's fooled me once, feel like such a dunce, I swear,
Need a spendin' FREEZE!!
(And I said)

chorus:
When d'we start bein' Lib'ral whores?!!
It's Big Guv'ment I abhor!!
Were yer promises just big lies?!
How come we didn't CONVICT RATS' spies?!
When do Conservatives get our turn?!
Fed'ral budgets got money ta burn!!
GOP's somewhere that I don't belong...
I wanna Party that knows BigGuv'ment's Wrong!!

Well, I voted 'gainst Jawn Wahnah...
'Cuz that RINO makes Libs proud!!
But I expect more from Dubyuh...
He'll last eight years, I've no doubt!!
But we gotta put on spendin' brakes...
And fight against Left's slime!!
So before you tell Ol' Mud to leave,

"Carry the Flag, Chris!"
by Glenn Pappalardo
Sep 30, 2004

One of the things that makes a sport, and particularly college football, such a wonderful game is its unpredictability. In any given game, on any given Saturday (or these days any Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, too), a team that has no business winning a game will win. A team that has no business losing a game will lose. And players who have never before and never again will be stars jump up and have the performances of their lives. It's why we watch and why we love the game. But there is a cruel side to the unpredictability of this sport, and it is a side that Virginia fans are beginning to know all too well. A side of separated shoulders, broken bones and twisted knees. A side of concussions and sprains. Or a side of ailments more abstract, more obscure, and, occasionally, much more severe.

Injuries are college football's grand irony - the constant reminder that, no matter how big, strong and fast human beings can become, they are still breakable, still very much human. They are the dasher of hopes and the breakers of dreams, and they have destroyed many a promising season for teams and players throughout the history of the sport. But injuries can be something else, something far less damaging. They can be a cause. They can be an inspiration. In a game where the psychological edge is often the difference between beating a worthy rival or losing to it, injuries can provide a motivation stronger than anything a healthy individual can provide for himself.

What often is the difference between an injury becoming a debilitating and demoralizing event versus an inspirational rallying cry is the individual involved. Who this person is to his teammates, and how he handles the adverse circumstances dealt by the football gods, can go a long way towards determining how his teammates and coaches react to his absence. If that is the case, Virginia is in good hands. There is no more vocal and demonstrative player on the Virginia football team than Chris Canty. Over his years with the program, he has transformed himself from a skinny but athletic boy out of Charlotte into a monstrous and dominating man of a defensive end. And more important than the muscle he has forged onto his tall frame is the maturity, leadership and respect he has forged out of his teammates.

This 2004 Cavalier defense, in fact this 2004 Cavalier team, is Chris Canty's. There are others with great leadership qualities on this roster - Alvin Pearman and Marques Hagans, for instance - but the team is Chris Canty's. With his outgoing and well-spoken nature, his work ethic and his relentless play, Canty represents, in one man, the metamorphosis of the Virginia program under Al Groh. Four years ago, he was undersized and overwhelmed. Now, after four years of rigorous training, learning and experience, he is perhaps the best defensive lineman in the nation. On this Cavalier roster, he is not alone in such a transformation.

Losing Chris Canty the football player is a major blow to the Virginia program on the field. His skills are undeniable, and his consistency and disruption invaluable to a defense. As a man, neither Kwakou Robinson, Chris Johnson nor Chris Long can be Chris Canty. It is unreasonable to ask them to be, and even more foolish to expect them to be at this point in their careers. This being the case, at one position - Chris Canty's position - there will be some level of drop-off. But Chris Canty the person has not been lost. Chris Canty the student, Chris Canty the representative of the Virginia program and Chris Canty the leader are all still very much in existence and with this program. And these Chris Cantys, by themselves, are a lot more than many major programs across the country have.

Instead, new challenges now await both Chris Canty and his Virginia teammates.

For Canty, the challenge is of not only maintaining his role of team leader but increasing it, of not allowing those around him to use his injury as an excuse for failing to accomplish everything this team set out to achieve. The challenge of setting the tone for what this injury really means to this program, by showing others it is in no way a defeat, only one more hurdle to be cleared en route to victory.

For his teammates, the challenge is to channel the feelings of frustration and sadness from losing a good friend and teammate on the field into a level of play that transcends what they have been able to muster to date. It's a matter of every player on every Virginia unit - defense, offense and special teams - understanding that only by raising their collective play to a level previously not considered attainable will they overcome the loss of a tremendous player.

For Chris Canty and this Virginia team, meeting these challenges means that the goals of this team when the season started can and will be met. It means that everything that these players worked for during the long offseason and training camp is still very much within their grasp. And it means that the measure of a leader isn't limited to statistics in a box score. Chris Canty will never again put on a Cavalier uniform and take the field for Virginia, and this is undeniably tragic. But that is where the tragedy ends. Because Chris Canty will be on the field - either in spirit or in person - with his teammates for the remainder of this season. He will be in the locker room and the film room, the classroom and the practice field. He will be there because he is a leader, and leaders know that what happens on the field is only a fraction of what makes them, and their team, what they are.

Late last season, Coach Groh introduced a flag to his players and asked them to step up, individually and collectively, to carry this flag through times of trouble. Since that point, the team has not lost a game.

The Cavaliers once again find themselves in a difficult time, only of a different nature. And this time, there is one man who should - and likely will - stand up and carry the flag, all the way to the finish line. He'll do it because he's embodied the concept since he set foot on Grounds at Virginia. He'll do it because it's the only way he knows how to be. He'll do it because he's a leader.

Carry the flag, Chris. And everyone else will follow.

"My Conversation with Ex-Governor Douglas Wilder (8/1/2000)"

GUV: But I still believe that the Republicans TODAY should have no trouble retaining a majority in the Senate...I think it's gonna be a horse race in the House. There are so many variables...because of the open seats, the lack of incumbency, the lack of free stamps and free postage, the lack of the ol' boy network, the lobbyist, the lack of the money pouring into incumbents...you see what I'm saying?

MUD: Um-hmm...right...

GUV: Well, all of that stuff throws it up fer grabs and let me tell ya, the public will ultimately be the group that reaches up and grabs somebody as they've done for the last ten years!! They've done it on a couple of occasions where no one wouldda believed the public wouldda resoundingly defeated the Democrats in the House as they did some 4-5 years ago. On the other hand, now that that has happened, many people have questioned whether the Republicans deserve to continue with that majority and that's the real battle.

MUD: I think...just for one time in my lifetime--and I'm 37 years old--I have yet to see...I mean, we've seen a Democratic President with Democratic control of both the House and Senate...

GUV: Right...

MUD: We have never seen it the other way around...

GUV: No...

MUD: There was some legislation that they passed, I mean, they were able to get through Welfare Reform, after three tries and a whole lotta blood, sweat, and tears...but there's a whole lotta other Conservative Legislation that takes Power outta DeeCee and gives it back to States, Localities and Individuals...and if that process is allowed to happen, and if--another thing is School Vouchers--if that becomes something that they are able to accomplish in the next 4-8 years, then I really don't think the Democratic Party has a reason to exist...because they will have to totally change their whole gameplan to...there's gonna be less dependent people, and that's who votes Democratic, folks who are dependent upon the Federal Government!! And they're gonna go away!!

[I kept talking for another 10-15 seconds before I realized I'd been cut off...LOL!!!]

GUV: Well, OK, I...uhmmm, I hear what you're sayin' and thank you for calling but I can tell you--in my judgment--you're gonna have a horserace in the House...."

LOL...and now, here I am volunteering to help out with Wilder's Mayoral run here in Richmond...MUD
