RAMALLAH, Palestine, September 18, 2004 (IPC+ Agencies)-- [Official PA website] Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri E. Ahamed, met on Friday with President Yasser Arafat at his office in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
"India has historically been unwavering in its support for the Palestinian cause. We remain convinced that the Palestinian people will succeed in realizing their national aspirations. It is our view that restrictions on the freedom of movement of President Arafat would not help the cause of peace," an excerpt of minister Ahamed's statement read.
The statement, which was published yesterday by the Indian Ministry for External Affairs, confirmed that India had always recognized President Arafat as an elected leader of the Palestinian people.
"Any effort contemplated to remove him from the scene would be indefensible in international law, would serve no constructive purpose, would negate all efforts towards reconciliation and would prove to be politically counterproductive, apart from having a definite negative impact on the Middle East peace process," the statement explained.
The Indian official held fruitful discussions with the Foreign Minister, Dr. Nabil Sha'th, on issues relating to the Middle East peace process as well as on other bilateral, regional and multilateral issues.
President Yasser Arafat welcomed, in a joint press briefing, his guest, praising the historical Indian-Palestinian ties at the official and popular levels.
The President blamed Israel for the current peace process deadlock, wondering about the 14 reservations Israel has produced against the internationally-sponsored Road Map peace blueprint amidst unconditional Palestinian acceptance of the plan.
According to the New Delhi-based Kerala newspaper's website, the Indian State Minister would hand over a fleet of 12 all-terrain vehicles and a consignment of medicines worth Rs. 10 million (approx. $220,000) as humanitarian aid for the beleaguered Palestinian population that has been facing a systematic assault by the Israeli occupation forces.
Some commentators believe that the Indian-Israeli multifaceted ties had undermined New Delhi's commitment to the Palestinian cause, particularly the Indian government's reluctance to condemn the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people under the previous National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Nevertheless, the new Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government that came to power in May 2004, had condemned the latest Israeli large-scale demolition of Palestinian homes in the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza Strip as well as the excessive use by Israeli troops of lethal force against the Palestinian population in cities, villages and refugee camps.
A number of Israeli officials such as the Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz reportedly renewed threats to assassinate or expel President Yasser Arafat, the elected leader of the Palestinian people.
Oh really, hummmm. Guess that means we have to start being weary of Indian names too.
Arafat is immaterial, too old, too senile, to affect
the direction Palestine will go. He will be dead within
2 to 3 years after which there will be a peace accord
signed between Israel and the Palestinian state.
new indian govt-leaning back to the old ways==arab ass kissers non aligned etc ..not the allies of the US and Israel vs the Paks...wait till they need help..
As soon as India stops going after the terroist leaders in Kashmir.
The only known efforts towards reconciliation by Arafat are acts of terrorism. India had best beware of supporting terrorism.
When world-wide militant Islam is defeated, and the Palestinian Authority destroyed, an agreement of some sort (excluding statehood) will be negotiated between the Arab residents of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, and Israel.
Worry about cleaning up your own country for Gods sake you have a Billion or who knows how many people living in trash and squalor PLUS are also the worlds biggest polluter along with China ..BTW the hell hole of Calcutta was coined there right??
"Worry about cleaning up your own country for Gods sake"
Thank you.... Hello India.. Pakistan much? how about those "untouchables" who don't have a chance in your country? How about all the women in your prisons for being victims?
<< When world-wide .... [Terroristic] islam is defeated, and the "'Palestinian' Authority" destroyed, an agreement of some sort [Excluding statehood] will be negotiated between the Arab residents of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, and [the Nation of Greater] Israel. >>
Yep.
Spot on, yonif!
The Minister in question is a leader of a small party which is in the ruling coalition & which is primarily a Muslim party-so he is playing to the gallery nothing else. The current Indian govt cannot & will not reverse ties with Israel-the relationship is too well entrenched for that to happen-they already sell billions worth in weaponry
& are also expanding business links &Israelis are real used to criticism, don't tell me that Bush only uses words of support for them.About India supporting the Palis-well it did so becaue it had poor leverage with the Persian gulf states who were pro Pakistan.
Doesn't India have a lot of its citizens working in Arab countries? This may be also a reason.
Yep-over 5 million(both legals & illegals)-if those wackos see India as being too comfy with Israel & send those expats back-the Indian economy would totter & oh we do have 138 million Muslims-most are peaceful, but u only need a microscopic number to go wild.
& to all those who brand India as an Arab ally-it 's not India which sell F-15s,F-16s,AMRAAMs,Abrams tanks & pretty much everyting to Saudi Arabia & Egypt.
And who might it be who does that? Could it be Sssssatan? The Great Satan?
With apologies to the Church Lady, there ought to be a better way to keep our weapons industry active than selling them to our Islamic enemies.
When the key events in Ezk.38& 39 take place and the God Of Abraham, Issac and Jacob takes a hand punish the enemies that surround Israel and subdue them and remove that monstrosity called the Dome of the Rock and leaves Israel the dominant power in the region controlling an area of land which I believe will be about the size they did under Solomon the world will be much better off.
I believe it's closer than we think and really the only solution for the problems of the Mideast that, speaking for myself, seems possible.
Don't ask me-there is nothing folks like you or others who think like you can do bout it-that's how perverted the system is.It's the same everywhere-the US,Russia & even India-sleazy economics decide "national interests".
