Taser Test Shocks Seattle Police Chief, NAACP President

SEATTLE -- Fifty-thousand-volt jolts from Taser guns nearly knocked Seattle's police chief and local NAACP head off their feet in a demonstration to reporters Friday.

Seattle police chief Gil Kerlikowske and local NAACP President Carl Mack winced, buckled and appeared to be stunned when Tasers were simultaneous switched on for two seconds by training officers.

"It's very painful," Kerlikowske said. "You can't move, you couldn't blink if you wanted to. ... There are shock waves going through your body. It's a scary feeling."

Mack said he felt a burning sensation where the electricity entered his body. The pulsing "affected every muscle in my body. It takes everything away from you."

"I've never felt anything like that in my life," he said. "You can't control anything."

The demonstration was designed to "reaffirm confidence in the safety and efficiency of the Seattle Police Department's Taser program," police said.

Before the demonstration, Kerlikowske said he wants to show his confidence in the non-lethal weapon. Mack says he wants to understand what victims go through.

Seattle police officers bid to be the one to zap the chief, with the proceeds going to Special Olympics.

The weapons are made by Taser International, based in Scottsdale, Ariz.

They can deliver a high-voltage shock that makes a person lose muscle control. The shock is delivered either on contact or by firing wires into a person's body.

Am I wrong for thinking that Chief Kerlikowske is just playing politically correct footsies w/ the local NAACP prez to score some points in the field of kinder and gentler law enforcement? An attempt, that won't work, to keep the racial profiling complaints to a minimum. Kissing backside, for lack of a better phrase. While (Girl)ikowski plays w/ Tasers his counterpart Sheriff Dave Reichert, 8th Dist Congressional Candidate, is chasing down stolen cars and parole violators. This pathetic excercise proved nothing not already known.

I think every police chief should test Tasers on themselves.

When the girly men start their usual whining about cruelty and abuse, he can state that they are safe and effective tools and that he has personally tested them.

I agree. However it doesn't have to be a big local media event

I expect that sooner or later the taser-cops will kill someone with a weak heart. Wonder how much insurance Taser International is carrying?

I suppose they could have auctioned off being able to shoot both of them with an actual firearm after the taser test.

Question:
Gentlemen, which do feel was the worst of the two experiences?

Many years ago, maybe 15, a friend of mine had what you might call a Taser. Two prongs, many volts.

We had 6 guys in a circle holding hands and then the button was pressed.... It was funny!

local NAACP President Carl Mack winced, buckled and appeared to be stunned when Tasers were simultaneous switched on for two seconds by training officers.

Local NAACP President was dressed down by the State NAACP over his playing the race card against the Democratic party Gov primary candidate CG trying to get local black King County Executive Sims a leg up.

Mack has also has critical of just about anything and everything that will get him headlines and he can relate to "race." He really doesn't care about the underlying facts or whether it is in the best interest of the black community or not. He is a loose cannon and people are becoming concerned.

Seattle Police had been accused of profiling and being watched to the point that many just pulled their cars under overpasses to kill time rather than pull anybody over for fear the person they would pull over was "black" and they would be accused of racisim. That episode seems to have blown over, but Seattle Police are ultra "politically correct."

"Mack says he wants to understand what victims go through."

For Mr. Mack's edification, the taser is used on perpetrators, not victims.

Already happened a bunch of time. Like rubber bullets this tenchonlogy is "less lethal", not "non-lethal". In Portland the police recently tazed some drug dealer buy his partner had already shot him with his 9mm so he was dead before getting tazed. I think the NAACP is still mad about that one.

In Kerlikowske's case, they should leave the power on indefinitely. He's a "girlie man" police chief! Immobilizing him would be a plus for Seattle.
