Dan: In real terms, the Prez is asking you to show your hand or fold.

I hope one of our attorneys will answer as to why he doesn't sue them.
To: joesbucks; Presto
He doesn't have to - in fact, it would only turn it into a 2-sided, partisan free-for-all.
As it stands with this interview, he has challenged CBS's integrity while gently deflecting the reporter's attempt to draw out any public speculation on Bush's part as to who is responsible. Bush is working from the topdog position. When your enemy is in the process of defeating himself, the last thing you want to do is interrupt him, LOL.

Pretty nice strategery from a "stoopid" guy. Will the Lame Stream Media ever learn?

President Bush is the only one that knows all the facts. So he can drive this car anywhere he wants.

I'm NOT an attorney, but check my post # 23. Politics and investigations rarely mix, at least in the sense of an honest investigation. If he choses to sue, best to do it after the election is over.
As long as CBS/Rather hides behind "we believe these documents to be true" they may technically have protection from a suit (such as when Oprah Winfrey won the case brought against her by the Texas Cattlemen's Assoc.). That they are press and thus entrusted with the resposibility to first verify sources/materials may negate whatever wiggle room they might have, but let their cohorts as posted above do to them what needs doing. I think the market of public opinion is going to finish what's left of that company.

What's interesting is the timing of the forged documents and the DNC airing the 'fortunate son' kery ad.
The documents were groundwork for the ad.

We thought it was a pretty good stategy for the swifties to invite kerry to sue them. why not follow through the other way around.

"I think what needs to happen is people need to take a look at the documents, how they were created, and let the truth come out," Bush added. Dubya is a little bit behind the curve on this one, however we all know he is a busy man with more important issues at hand.
Wouldn't it be great if he could, in his position as POTUS say "Thank you Jim Robinson and Free Republic" for doing what needed to be done while understanding that in my present position couldn't do what you have done?

"There are a lot of questions about the documents and they need to be answered," Bush [said]. He's "questioning" them? Why isn't he denouncing them? Aren't they false?

I'm tellin' ya, George W. is Michael Corleone - he settles all family business. Clinton {by beating Gore}, Sadaam and now Rather! Sweet!

"people need to take a look at the documents, how they were created"That part there in bold says that the president knows they are fakes, and is a denunciation at the same time.

The longer the campaign is dominated by this flap over meaningless 30-year-old documents, the less time that Kerry has to gain any traction. Picture the hourglass of the Kerry campaign. The sand is rushing out of the glass and there are only 45 days left.

He's being sarcastic, throwing Rather's line right back at him. No need to be brutally direct when a little subtlety will work fine.

Point taken. We don't hear much defiance the last couple of days from the Rather/CBS camp, do we? Their best 'witnesses' have frankly been threir worst enemies. Heh heh heh
