Have we done any backtracking to the original urban legands that were used to create the story in the first place?

Why? The documents are a lie. There is no story behind them. Some kook made it up.

So, the content of the forged memos is a nut to crack.

Well, I think and have posted (but gotten no response) that there's still more to be gleaned from careful examination of the memos itself. A fax machine will not produce features smaller than 1/8mm (1/203") in its output, but will usually preserve such features if present on the input. Some fax machines will tend to thicken lines by a pixel when refaxing something, but generally they will preserve most features of a document that's being refaxed. What they will almost never do is re-add features that were lost in earlier generations.

Examination of the letterforms in the CBS faxes reveals that the tops and bottoms are distorted as a consequence of being printed with lines that were less than 1/203" thick [the edges of the serifs in Times New Roman taper off to hairlines]. This distortion must have occurred on the first generation of faxing. After that, the serifs would have been too thick for such distortions to be caused by further faxing.

I would be very interested in finding out what sorts of distortion, if any, are caused by the fax machine from which these documents were allegedly sent. If it does not cause the type of distortion shown in the CBS memos, that would mean that either the documents arrived at CBS via some other route or, at minimum, the documents that were sent from Kinkos were already faxed copies.

I am, unfortunately, not very knowledgeable about when different imaging algorithms would have been used by different fax manufacturers, but I would expect that the first machine to fax these documents was not outrageously old, but not exactly new either. Certainly better algorithms exist for converting a document to a black-and-white bitmap than were used on this document, but the algorithms used did have some degree of design sophistication. So as a WAG I'd guess a mid-1990's fax machine. I'd be surprised if Kinko's didn't have something better.

Ain't it the everloving truth? I think it's just about time for the guys and gals with gold badges with blue enamel (Feds) to start setting up interviews? Also, the Texas badges could easily get Mr. Burkett real nervous and talkative - who knows what could come out of that converstaion (once he changes his underwear)?

Above the law.

Dan Rather isn't lying. There is TRUTH in the forged memos. A Divine Conspiracy having to do with the JFK assination, (which was Dan's break into the business) VietNam and the 2000 election vote count. It's something as plain as the fonts.

Dan believes because he saw the Zapruder film first... and there was a whole thing surrounding that... because of how close he was to the story... He saw something then that ties it to the TANG memos. The content of the 'forgeries' reveals something... Dan wants to talk about the story and isn't budging... What's the frequency Kenneth? It's 990. Michigan State football is on.

Trust me when I say that this Nation right now is split as it was before the Civil War. We can answer all the riddles.

I've been to Dealy Plaza several times. I rolled down the sidewalk in my wheelchair to the point where Kennedy was shot and a LOUD voice in my head said: THIS IS WHERE HISTORY CHANGED .. I never hear voices, BTW ;-} The country split at that point... it is now time to bring it together... 40 years later.

There IS more to the story. The Law Above.

Fair and Balanced

On Wednesday night at 10:00 pm, I will don my jammies and bunny slippers as I tune my TV to the season premier of NBC’s “Law and Order” (in spite of their dig at President Bush last season) and not to the premier of CBS’s “CSI: New York.” EVEN IF I AM NOT VIEWING THE TV AT THAT TIME! You are welcome to join me.

Now that is something that can not be denied. [And just as close to violence]

I think the market of public opinion is going to finish what's left of that company [CBS].

Exactly! And that's the way we conservatives should want it to be.

The best way to insure that happens is to...see my tagline.

I Heard on one of the talkshows this compared To the Battle of Gettysburg... Nov. 19, 1863

Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who died here that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have hallowed it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.

It is rather for us the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth."

Your friend is right. I heard the baloney about Bush's NG files being found in the garbage can back in his Governor days. Can anyone imagine two military guys decide to "cleanse" papers from Bush's files so he won't be embarrassed. What shall we do with them? burn them? shred them? into the commode? Oh no, of course, put them in the garbage can. This Burkett and company operate with sub-par IQ's IMHO.

FCC, yes
SEC also.

Keep in mind the new SEC rules that hold Viacom corp chiefs personally liable for knowingly permitting fraud...

Here he is:

Rather used the phrase 'unimpeachable' witnesses. Now I don't have personal knowledge of the President's NG service. I don't know if he missed a physical or failed to report. The whole controversy seems wrapped around a story a guy.. through no fault of his own.. born into a situation where he had the opportunity to advance that someone else may not have had. I have that 'break' in my life.. several times. I've been fortunate ... but so what? God gives all of breaks if we are good people. It doesn't matter who your parents are. How do movie stars get 'discovered'?

Bush's campaign is so disciplined, every move is well thought out and carefully calculated.

When they story broke, they decided to sit back and watch, just when it starts to fade Bush mentions it in a very benign way that no one, not even cBS could criticize.

Compare this to the Kerry campaign that is just flailing hysterically at Bush and looks totally out of control.

The contrast is just astounding.

Exactly! And that's the way we conservatives should want it to be.

Why would conservatives want a company.. any company destroyed? Because those making editorial decisions for CBS Evening News hold different beliefs? Take the whole company down to silence them? Believe me, there is some real soul searching going on at CBS News right now questioning bias and everything else.

Remember in the Kennedy administration, the pool press wouldn't touch anything about President Kennedy's personal life? There are stories of adultery... do you believe he had affairs? If so, should the press have reported them?

Just wondering

I wonder why very few are going after Viacom.I've been going after CBS sponsers (with fair results)but just started on Viacom. Redstone is worth nearly 10 billion, operates dozens of enterprises in 166 countries.

We are at a crossroads with this story. Going after Viacom is something that's negative. We used to have to FReep to get attention to drive an issue up through the layers to be heard. And that's cool.. nothing wrong with that.

This time we really didn't have to FReep much at all.. the story was picked up by the blogs and up it went on it's own. It's still being talked about.. MSM is keeping it alive. Fox News Watch dedicated a good portion of today's show on the subject and the WHOLE panel - left and right - was down on CBS.

After reading the President's message TO US... he is GIVING DIRECTION where to focus ourselves. He used the word need twice.. one plural.. one was for the 'internal' campaign the other was for us. I am an unpaid volenteer for Bush/Cheney 04.

Conservatives believe that companies that produce bad products should feel the effects of the market and should not survive.

CBS produces a bad product. Either they respond to the market and improve their product, or they should fail.
