The former Texas National Guard officer suspected of providing CBS News with possibly forged records on President Bush's military service called on Democratic activists to wage "war" against Republican "dirty tricks" in a series of Internet postings in which he also used phrases similar to several employed in the disputed documents. Retired Lt. Col. Bill Burkett, who earlier said he overheard Bush aides conspiring with the commander of the Texas National Guard to "sanitize" the president's military records, has refused to comment on reports that he could be CBS's confidential source. In e-mails yesterday to The Washington Post, he said he would speak out "at the appropriate time" but "that time is not now."

I think what we have here is a healthy little competition between the two largest newspapers in the country for a Pulitzer prize winning article connecting the forged memos to the Kerry campaign.
It just doesn't get better than this.

Regardless of where personnel records are kept wouldn't all branches of the military shred such records before putting them in the trash?

In e-mail messages to a Yahoo discussion group for Texas Democrats, Burkett laid out a rationale for using what he termed "down and dirty" tactics against Bush. He said that he had passed his ideas to the Democratic National Committee but that the DNC seemed "afraid to do what I suggest."
In another message, dated Sept. 4, Burkett hinted he might have had advance knowledge of some details in an explosive segment that aired Sept. 8 on CBS's "60 Minutes."
---
** Can anyone check out the yahoo group?**
It looks like he may be a little net saavy - and that could be an opening into his head and what tactics might be afloat.

I watched the video of Rather being interviewed where he repeatedly said the story was true. He also said something about waiting years to get the info and then it came. Unbelievable, not to question the timing. He has lost what little sense he had.

OFF FROM A RELATED SITE: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Texas-Democrats/message/7074 From: "Rosalinda" Date: Thu Aug 19, 2004 4:50 pm Subject: Veterans Caravan [for Kerry] Update [Texas portion, Sept 24 to Oct 2] ADVERTISEMENT CITY TEAM CAPTAIN REQUIREMENTS AND CITY TEAM CAPTAIN SIGNUP ROSTER The following are the requirements that a City Team Captain must fulfill. Fulfilling these requirements is critical to the success of the Veterans Caravan For Senator John Kerry. Your position is vital and we definitely appreciate your involvement. The key to success is communication. 1. Via email keep these following members continually notified of what actions you are taking in behalf of the caravan and when needed , ask for prior permission before taking any actions: Rick Bolanos, email Rbolanos@v..., Contact # - 915 630-3036 Larry Romo, email LLromo@m..., Contact # - 210-219-1905 Jim Cumming, email txdemocraticvets@a..., Contact # - 713-863-0433 Do not make any commitments on behalf of the Veterans Caravan until you receive written permission via email from either Rick Bolanos, Larry Romo or Jim Cumming. 2. You are the host for the time we come to your city/town to the point we leave your city/town. It is imperative that we keep to our timeline so your plan for us must keep to the times listed in the schedule. There is no room for flexibility unless there is an extreme emergency beyond human control. 3. Find us a hotel that will house 53 people. Our maximum cost we can spend is $80 per room which would include any city occupancy and state sales tax. We need two separate beds in each room for two vets. To simplify matters get the rooms to be all non-smoking. Any smokers can smoke outside. Do not make a final commitment to any rooms until either Rick Bolanos, Larry Romo or Jim Cumming give the final say in writing to you via email. Please send Rick, Larry and Jim your hotel recommendation with prices, etc., via email by 1 Sep 04. 4. Find us a perferably indoor venue (example: vet hall) to have the veterans rally at. We are concerned with an outdoor venue about the weather. Coordinate with the venue manager all necessary requirements such as a stage, microphone, and chairs for the veterans. You are responsible to set up the entire program within the time specified on our schedule. If possible, try to set up an inexpensive meal after rally for us (donated preferred). For the selected venue, we hope you can solicit local Democrats for donations to cover the expenses or get the venue donated. Your are responsible to advertise the event to draw local and regional veterans to the rally. You may have a copy of our list to search nearby zip codes, locations, etc. We need a lot of vets and also non-veteran TDV members, and others, to show up. Please send Rick, Larry and Jim your tentative venue program by 14 Sep 04, including rally location time, etc., in conformance with our bus itinerary that we have provided you. 5. Please give Larry Romo via email the addresses of the finalized hotel and venue by 16 Sep 04. He will produce a master list of maps for the bus driver and others needing the maps. 6. Larry Romo will continually update the schedule with the locations of the hotels and venues as they are finalized. 7. I'd never thought I'd see the likes of this! CBS getting hammered, NYTimes and Washington Post somewhat objectively covering a major Democratic scandal.
Toto we aren't in Kansas anymore!
To: macbee
One wonders if Burkett followed Cleland's advice. If Burkett actually sent copies of the docs to the Kerry campaign (which they haven't mentioned receiving up to now), look for staffers to start scrambling for cover.
According to the NRO, the Prowler(??)(sheesh, there have been so many) these docs were sitting in the DNC 6 weeks ago. They were trying to decide what to do with them. Yeah right.
Between Burkett, Barnes, Rather's daughter, the DNC, and Dan the Man himself, we have a home grown scandal of epic proportions.

Wormhole faxing! That is absolutely PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!

Am I missing something? No, you got it right, except that she was working on it for five years without turning up anything. In other words, she and Rather refused to believe anything positive. They just knew there had to be something damaging out there, and they were going to keep at it until they found it. That's not simple bias. That's obsession, blind partisanship of a deeply disturbing nature, and a complete misuse of their positions in journalism.

"But none of them have called me back."
Maybe they called back the next day. Or the next.
"If Burkett actually sent copies of the docs to the Kerry campaign (which they haven't mentioned receiving up to now), look for staffers to start scrambling for cover."
The early article from the American Prowler portrayed tips from Kerry campaigners that some had indeed seen the documents.
BTW, how does he have Cleland's cell ph. number???

"Is this the same Max Cleland who blew himself up with a grenade?"
I read it was kind of a "hold muy beer and watch this" thing.
Something about him being on a beer run and dropped a grenade, someone dropped a grenade, someone threw a grenade? Max picked it up and the pin had been or was pulled. It detonated and I think he lost both legs and one arm.
He seems to be a very bitter person, I may have also been when your entire remaining life take a very bad permanent turn for the worse.
