The former Texas National Guard officer suspected of providing CBS News with possibly forged records on President Bush's military service called on Democratic activists to wage "war" against Republican "dirty tricks" in a series of Internet postings in which he also used phrases similar to several employed in the disputed documents. Retired Lt. Col. Bill Burkett, who earlier said he overheard Bush aides conspiring with the commander of the Texas National Guard to "sanitize" the president's military records, has refused to comment on reports that he could be CBS's confidential source. In e-mails yesterday to The Washington Post, he said he would speak out "at the appropriate time" but "that time is not now."

Mapes hasn't been "working" the story for four year. We've heard that all day. It's simply cover to explain why the story always pops up during a George W. Bush election campaign. You're not missing anything.
Could be a coincedence. Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry, and McAullife
have been using Burkett talking points since February.
The swiftees forced their hand on this.
I see impeachment for Senator Kerry in the future.
It sounds like Cleland just confirmed when he was asked. Whether he realized the implication is not clear.
Better if Dobbs had gone to Burkett then and asked if he followed Max's advice and contacted the Kerry Kamp. Wait--Burkett isn't talking. Well, Dobbs could ask the Kerry people directly like he did Cleland.
Tune in tomorrow indeed, because that is the next logical place to make inquiries (and I think we all know the answer).
Another thought---when was Cleland in Texas trying to deliver that letter to President Bush? Was that the cellphone/car ride discussion? I'll go look up when it was...this article says they spoke "mid August".
Since 1998, I've commented that we Democratic Leaders were the ones who bear the blame for Democratic defeats. And over the past year, we;ve made great strides to try to correct those problems in Texas.
And then there is this
I'm serious folks, this is a GOOD year to be a Democrat.
And look what he wrote in response to a message entitled Re: [TX-Demos] Kerry Events for the week of 08/15/04 - 08/21/04
I think this can become a spot where we all can get in touch with those doing a good job. FOr example, I end up in doctor's offices weekly in the Dallas Ft. Worth area, but can't seem to find out what's going on to wehre we might join in. [He is referring to Kerry events]
And this
I wished that Tommy could make a presentation to the critical consultants for the John Kerry campaign and develop the message that the voters can not miss concerning "shifting the tax burden".
We, as Democrats must be able to step forward and show that our number one and only goal is to provide HONEST Government and that we are willing to police ourselves in order to make it so.
Also, this sounds a little cryptic
Many of us have risked everything on this election.
The Washington Post just torched the Kerry Campaign.

Anatomy of a Forgery

"...Now, the producer says, there is growing concern inside the building on 57th Street that they may have been suckered by the Kerry campaign. "There is a school of thought here that the Kerry people dumped this in our laps, figuring we'd do the heavy lifting on the story. That maybe they had doubts about these documents but hoped we'd get more information," says the producer. "If that's the case, then we're bigger fools than we already appear to be judging by all the chatter about how these documents could be forgeries."..."
Before, during or after this little stunt:
August 26, 2004
excerpt:
CRAWFORD, Texas Former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland said he tried to get a letter to President Bush asking him to specifically denounce independent campaign ads against John Kerry but no one at the president's ranch would accept the letter.
~snip~
Duh! I just posted how Cleland went to Crawford on August 26 and I wondered if the conversation was before during or after, forgetting the above sentence.

Lt. Col. BIll Burkett is a decorated Vietnam era veteran who served 28 years in senior command and staff positions within the US Army and Army National Guard. While serving on the National Guard staff for then Governor George W. Bush, Burkett broke ranks and exposed an ongoing scam of reporting over 1,700 soldiers as present (Ghost Soldiers- USA Today, 2001) and fraudulent readiness reporting (USA Today) as well as the shredding of George W. Bush's own military service files. Burkett was one of five subjects in James Moore's book, "Bush's War for ReElection," and one of the sources for information in the Michael Moore's film "Farenheit 911." He is decorated soldier and recognized military process expert.
LOL
Who will play Buckhead?!
Also note - from the American Spectator previously - the person who referred the source of the documents to the DNC was described by DemoncRAT sources as "a military person"; some, at the time, first suspected Wesley Clarke - it's now clear that person was MAX CLELAND.
get = gets
Sounds to me like this guy is about to blow his top - probably have a press conference and, with all the masses assembled, start spewing his filth and leaving no doubt what's been going on around here, dowin in Abilene Texas.
Uhmmm. I would have to be a nice conservative actor, perhaps Chuck Norris.
There are several other Texas Dem groups, two of which are members only.

Also, as we reported today, CBS credited Burkett as a document source for a Feb 2004 story which was broadcast on their network. It was about his allegations that Bush had people throw away his records. They did not question Burkett's authority, despite the fact that other media like Boston Globe and ABC refused to touch him with a 10-foot pole
