ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - In a Sept. 11 story about military retirees' reaction to new documents concerning President Bush's National Guard service, The Associated Press incorrectly identified Ahmad Majied of Albany as a former Navy SEAL. Majied assisted SEAL teams while he was in the Navy, but never was trained as a SEAL. "I should have been more specific," he said Friday.

Sending a link to AuthentiSEAL would seem to be a most appropriate course of action.

Good call, TMcG. Bravo Zulu.

"I should have been more specific," he said Friday.

" I was a SEAL. Well, to be more specific, I was not a SEAL."

Yes they did. They came out and "Rathered it". That is to say they stood by the story as correct as written.

WND went after the AP story. World Net tried to get a correction from AP. The story on WND is pretty interesting, considering that AP has now had to retract.

Has anyone found out what this guy's name was before he changed it? Do we know if he was ever in the Navy?

"I should have been more specific," he said Friday.

Journalistic weasel words.

He should have been more honest.

And now that one of his claims has been vetted and found wanting, will the "journalist" who spread this deception also call into question everything else this liar said?

Yes, his real name became known, and he was not listed on the official NAVY roster as a SEAL. That's how it was completely verified.

I have seen no verification either way about his being retired Navy, but his real name is known.

Great post. Here's what the AP reporter originally said when told that Majied wasn't a SEAL:

In an interview with WorldNetDaily, however, Minor says he has no reason to disbelieve Majied's story.

"I really trust this guy," he said. "I believe he's a real straight shooter."

Minor says Majied didn't give him his previous name, "and I didn't press the matter."

The vet has received "nasty calls" since the issue has been publiclized, Minor says, adding, "This is a very peaceful guy. … There's a peace about his voice."

Minor says Majied homeschools his seven children. "These are really upstanding people," he told WND.

At some point didn't AP say that the reason Majied didn't show up as a SEAL was that he was previously known by another name and he changed it when he converted to Islam?

The retraction makes it sound like an inadvertant mistake whereas AP actually attempted to justify this guy's credentials and impugn Travis McGee.

Well, that's funny, he told elfman in a phone conversation that he attended SEAL school...haha, as if there's such a thing called SEAL school.
