Document distractionAlleged forgery drama has cost CBS some credibility, and has postponed - again - focus on today's issues
Friday, September 17, 2004
CBS News, in the person of anchorman Dan Rather, has staked its professional reputation on the authenticity of over-the-transom documents purporting to show that, 32 years ago, the man who would become president of the United States had shirked his military duty. Shaky ground on which to place something so important. Such sourcing is always risky for a news organization. But when the object of the reporting occupies the White House, the consequences of being wrong are immense. And scarcely had CBS aired its report before reams of document experts were punching holes in paperwork that looks, even to the untrained eye, far more like the product of Windows than of a Smith-Corona. The network's later position - that the story is true, even if the documents turn out to be falsified - is backpedaling onto a banana peel. The venerable Rather is now the vulnerable anchor, as polls show a general widespread disbelief in the proffered "evidence," and Nielsen numbers show CBS falling badly behind its broadcast competitors in nine of the top 10 markets. What happens between CBS and the viewing public is no particular concern of ours. But the result of this weeklong national news media tempest - and the months of navel-gazing about what President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry did or did not do more than half their lifetimes ago that it caps - is nothing short of vexatious in its irrelevance. In just 47 days, Americans will decide who will lead this country through increasingly perilous times: We are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Who has a plan for victory? We are threatened by terrorists. Who can best defend us? We are in a painfully slow economic recovery. Who can offer hope for the hurting? We face a spiraling national debt. Who can bring it under control? These are but a few of the very real issues that we face. And with the critical decision day just six weeks away, we find ourselves mired in a debate about typefaces. Enough about Vietnam and 1972. We need, desperately, to focus on America in 2004.

"I am informed that the head of a CBS affiliate in a large East Coast city is telling viewers who call in that he wants Rather to apologize on 60 Minutes and then resign. This local network official reportedly plans to present the flood of critical emails he has been getting to the network heads in New York.
I suspect this gentleman is not alone."
If we focus on a few affiliates we can realy send them a wake up call. So everyone e-mail or call Cleveland!!!

the man who would become president of the United Statesaka, the current President of the United States
I don't mind calling Cleveland, but aren't they going to see my call's coming from NJ?
The next big announcement from CBS will likely contain the words, "...spend more time with him family."
"I don't mind calling Cleveland, but aren't they going to see my call's coming from NJ?"
I'm not sure 800 numbers work in that respect . You can always send an e-mail:

We are threatened by terrorists. Who can best defend us? [Bush]
We are in a painfully slow economic recovery. [Wrong!] ...
We face a spiraling national debt. Who can bring it under control? [Certainly not Kerry.]
Any more questions?

"backpedaling onto a banana peel."
I like that.
As of today, Bush has taken the lead in states that were "swing" and is within four points of Kerry in NY. If the election were held today, Bush would win 44 states.
He should be spending time in jail.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Rather is about to take them down.
Fraudulently influencing a national election;
Fraudulently discrediting an American president in time of war;
Fraudulently misrepresenting the support and expertise of document examiners;
Fraudulently failing to disclose and inform the public of blatant political bias and innumerable connections to partisans while occupying the critical and trusted role of national broadcaster;
Fraudulently peddling forged government documents;
Fraudulently covering up evidence of a federal crime;
Fraudulently slandering and libeling innocent critics seeking the truth.
The scandal of the millennium. CBS is ruined.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether CBS broke a few rules or took a few liberties with our worldwide viewers -- we did. But you can't hold a whole television network responsible for the actions of a few sick, perverted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole television network system? And if the whole television network system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of the news media in general? I put it to you ... isn't this an indictment of our entire leftist society? Well, you can do what you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United Socialist States of America!"
Any reply, eggman? I've left a couple of messages and the station manager has not gotten back to me.
I think if you hit *86 before the number it will block their caller ID.
Dial *67 before dialing the number. It blocks caller ID and only shows as 'Private'. ;o)
