There absolutely is such a campaign going on. This week-end I visited with a 15-year-old cousin who is a rabid Kerry supporter. She knows I am a Bush voter, and before she even said "hello" to me, she confronted me with the fact that Bush is going to implement a draft.

I asked how he would do that all by himself, and pointed out that the first politician in recent times to call for a draft was congressman Charles Rangel (D-Harlem). Didn't matter to her. She is sure that she is going to be drafted when she is 18 if Bush wins.

It's not a whispering campaign, it's a screaming, hysterical screed about how we're going to have a draft. It is going around in emails and they even give the bill number and contact info. Politically active people know that this is just Charlie Rangel doing what he does best and no-one, even Dimocrats support such a bill.

CBS did a piece on it acting as if it was a valid concern and now the Dims are starting a whispering campaign that electing Bush will bring a new draft.

You don't need a whispering campaign to get people worried about a draft when there are neocons SHOUTING that we have to invade more countries - Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc. How we could do that without conscription, you tell me. Also there is the fact that guard is stretched thin, and they're being kept longer than normal - all in all, an "unprecedented" reliance on the guard, according to Elaine Donnelly, a conservative defense analyst. If there are kids (and parents) who are concerned that a draft might be coming, it's hard to say they're being totally unreasonable.

A student at my college sent an e-mail forward to the whole campus claiming this, and I replied to the whole campus in a scathing e-mail quoting Snopes.

I have lots of letters in my inbox thanking me for doing so....glad I did.
