CBS EXECS CONCERN OVER VIEWERSHIP PLUNGE; RATHER RATINGS FADE IN MAJOR MARKETS

CBS executives on both coasts have become concerned in recent days that Dan Rather's EVENING NEWS broadcast has plunged in the ratings since the anchor presented questionable documents about Bush's National Guard service.

NIELSEN numbers released this week show Rather fading and trailing his rivals in every Top 10 city, other than San Francisco, with audience margins in some cities running more than 6 to 1 against CBS!

Executives fear many voters inclined to vote for Bush are now switching off Rather.

"The audience appears to becoming polarized," a top CBS source said from LOS ANGELES on Thursday. "Rightly or wrongly, we're being perceived as 'anti-Bush,' which I do not think is fair to Dan, who is a fine journalist... of course we do not like to see the ratings coming back the way they are this week."

In Philadelphia, the nation's #4 market, Rather pulled a 2.6 rating/5 share on Tuesday night against ABC's 13.3 rating/23 share and NBC's 4.0/7.

In Chicago, Rather hit a 2.3/5 to ABC's 9.2/20.

CBS trailed ABC by more than 2 to 1 in Los Angeles.

And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS.

Rather finished dead last in New York during the 6:30 pm timeslot among all broadcast channels tracked by NIELSEN on Tuesday.

You know of course that John Roberts will be just another Rather clone? The USS C-BS will just continue to sink long after Dan is settled on his island, somewhere that no "biased" reporter could find him.

I just sent an e-mail to our local CBS radio affiliate. Rather does regular radio newscasts. I asked them to disaffiliate themselves with CBS until Rather is fired.

Here is my response in its entirety.

"Coming Soon!"

Wow. I don't know if this is a precursor to the imminent demise of Rather or if their formal response is coming soon. The ! is what got my attention.

ha! What is so funny to me is that I NEVER watch his news or ANY of the Alphabet News Channels. I watch FOX News.

But TWICE I have watched part of it TWO nights since last Friday. I watch some Friday night and some last night - but ONLY so I could see the LIES coming from the horse's (ar$es) mouth myself.

I also watched his hit piece on "60 Minutes" last week and yesterday, too.

Ohfercryinoutloud, CBS..........even my kids know there are consequences to your actions.

Your golden boy anchor shows bogus documents that you guys should have spotted from the get-go as fakes, near the end of an election cycle, purely to smear and attempt to unseat a sitting US President whose family he happens to despise (it's visceral with him; you can tell). Then..........you expect us to prove they aren't fakes?????? Then..........you "stand by" this fraud and can't understand why we don't buy it?????? Now your boy says that it's not whether the docs are fraudlulent or not, but it's what is IN these fraudulent documents that is "true" and should be responded to by the White House????????????????????????????

I agree with you completely Miss Marple. CBS is the brand but the suits at CBS don't know it.

Staying with Rather as his ratings continue to fall is just stupidity.

If they did a ton of auditions before focus groups until they found an anchor and reporters the public will trust. Hired those people.. fired the current staff, and put the new staff on the air with strict orders to be fair an balanced,... they would kill Jennings and NBC in two books.

They are not smart enough to do it.

Rather is not exposed as soiled merchandise.. His ratings will continue to fall and CBS will continue to lose sponsors.

I would say that 37 or 38percent of the public would not buy a product advertised on 60 minutes or the CBS evening news. They are going to take hit. Rather and the entire staff has to go.. The sooner the better or it may take years for CBS to recover.

There are movers and shakers today ordering their advertising agencies to NOT BUY CBS.

Since these memos have all but been proven to be fakes, was that "attack" on blather legit, or was it one of a long line of attention-getting frauds? We demand to see the REAL records on that incident.

What I think is happening here is that CBS, in order to save its ratings hyde...is going to have to "out" who- ever at the DNC authorized this. This must really be sticking in Rather's craw, especially if the higher ups are telling Rather that HE is the one that is going to have to do it!
