They figured that the memo story only had to hold up for a few weeks to get traction and stop Bush's momentum. After that, so what if they turn out to be phony? They can spin that story until after Kerry's inauguration easily. They really didn't expect the whole thing to blow up in their faces in about twenty minutes.
So, now Rather is stalling while he tries to figure out a way out without going to jail or revealing his source (the Kerry campaign or DNC).
It's pleasant to think about, anyway.
I think that it all accidental; that there is no intelligent plan in the DNC camp. Never-the-less, when the Swiftvets produce the document signed by Admiral Zumwalt saying Kerry is "Unfit For Command" the Dems/MSM will all scream that it is "another" forgery. They will be screaming so loud that no one will hear the voices saying "Sign form 180".

There are several things going on here at once. The first is that memogate was supposed to be the first hit in a one, two punch. The second hit was/is supposed to be the October surprise. That was supposed to be another memo which indicated that a pilot named Bath, was grounded at the same time as Bush for using cocaine, Rather was/is going to say that through guilt by association, Bush used cocaine also and was afraid to take the physical because he might get caught in the newly instituted drug testing. (I've been told that drug testing didn't start until 1982).
The second reason is that the DNC doesn't care about the veracity of the story. They passed the memos to Dan because they knew he would run with them and that's what they wanted. (Dan is computer illiterate) The DNC just wants to fill the air waves with so much garbage that the voters tune out all the truthful allegations about Kerry's Vietnam service. Their purpose isn't a Kerry win, however, they just want to insure that Bush has no coat tails in the congressional elections. Got it?
Funny how a few "fair and balanced" RINOs on here think Bob S is a good guy...talk about dancing with the devil!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
CBS bet the farm on this... the Grand Poobah has staked its reputation on it.
If the public realizes that CBS got duped and used forged documents, *every*... *last*... *thing* that CBS is planning by way of sabotaging Bush is in jeopardy (along with their reputation as a news source) (not that the latter is in any way nearly as important to them as the former, of course...).
Therefore, since if they come out and admit they were duped, they're toast, their ONLY hope of being able to salvage their credibility is to continue with the denial.
Since the originals of the documents never existed, they can never *really* be checked for authenticity. So, unless someone caves and fingers the forger, there will be a (however vanishingly small) iota of uncertainty to which CBS can cling, in a desperate effort to avoid an outright admission.
In a way, I'm actually preferring it this way, since it prolongs their agony... Which German philosopher was it who said, "Better a horrible end, than a horror without end" - ? For CBS, and Rather in particular, I prefer the latter... if I could stretch it out for years, I would do so with glee...
To which President Bush should reply:
"Those documents have raised many questions for the American people that need answering, particularly their authenticity. Since Dan Rather and CBS are still doing an internal investigation to see if they are fraudulent or not, I cannot make any comments on their content. Next question please............."
