Isn't interesting that this guy Burkett was able to have over heard a telephone conversation. Did he have the same equipment as the traveling couple here from Florida had when they "accidentally" tuned into Gingrich's cell phone conversation.

How is it possible for this smart Aleck to overhear a two-way conversation, unless they were using speaker phones???

Is there a CBS affiliate in Abilene? Why wouldn't or couldn't they use their fax machine?

There is. But a network news person wouldn't be caught dead asking a favor from an affiliate station.

Especially if it's a Nielsen "C" market affiliate...

Well, it only took me almost three hours to read through the thread.... skipping only a few posts. I only recently discovered freeping from links referencing the TANG memos, and I spent quite a bit of time since last Friday.... freeping! What amazes me is that freeping is really an exhilarating experience! I have never seen truth analyzed and produced so fast! I think if we really want to win the war on terror, we should just freep it! There is no organization that can keep up with the speed of this kind of group!

OK, I confess. I too have lurked since Quidam and I might have posted a couple or three times! (AND I know you are a girl!)
I live south of Brownwood(and Ben Barnes used to live there but no longer). However, the Mayor of Brownwood worked for him when Barnes was in Texas Government. Not sure why, but for some reason when I think of Ben Barnes I associate him with a stripper who lived in Brownwood by the name of Candy Barr!
I watched ABC news from Abilene tonight(off the antenna since I live in the country and can't get cable). They had breaking story in the middle of the newscast about this story. They were showing video of Burkett speaking to the Abilene Democratic party earlier in the year. The reporter indicated he was speaking about President Bush's NG days. Couldn't hear what he was saying but would think the station (KTXS) might have copy if anyone would want to contact them.

Burkett's been published in Veterans for Peace, eh?

To: Jeff Gannon
More birds of a feather - all in bed together

Veterans for Peace, Inc.
(VFP) -   CEASE FIRE! VETERANS FOR PEACE--From Warriors To Diplomats (1999 story)
http://www.countryink.com/currart1.html
"Membership in Veterans for Peace is not limited to veterans with honorable discharges. Associate memberships are open to family members and may soon be expanded to include anyone who supports their principles. Contact them at (202) 347-XXXX, 1511 K Street NW, Suite 525; Washington, DC 20005; email: VFP@igc.org."

There's been two addresses found for them - don't know (yet) for sure whether these are old, new or current

1511 K Street, NW
Washington, DC 20005
(202) 347-xxxx
fax: 202-347-xxxx
VFP@igc.org

One thing kinda interesting (maybe)  - The 733 15th Street address sits smack among a number of foreign embassies

733 15th Street, NW
Suite 928
Washington, DC 20005
(202) 347-xxxx voice
(202) 347-xxxx fax
vfp@igc.org

The 733 15th Street address is the "Woodward Building" in D.C., and "VFP" apparently shares building space with some interesting neighbors, among [them]-

Volunteer Coordinator National Organization for Women (NOW), Second Floor
International Labor Rights Fund. (Human Rights and Labor Laws)
Gray Panthers
American Civil Liberties Union National Prison Project, Suite 620
Code Pink Women's Pre-emptive Strike For Peace, #507
    (how convenient)
"Veterans for Peace" is shown as a grant recipient from the HKH Foundation of New York, NY

Here's a small rundown of some top grantees of HKH across varied timeframes -

per http://www.activistcash.com/donor_detail.cfm?DONOR_ID=125

Activist Group   Total Donated   Time Frame

  Tides Foundation & Tides Center   $235,000.00   1991 - 1997

  Natural Resources Defense Council   $185,000.00   1990 - 2001

Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy   $151,600.00   1997 - 2001

  Greenpeace   $100,000.00   1995 - 2001

  Western Organization of Resource Councils   $50,000.00   2001 - 2001

  Center for Media & Democracy   $45,000.00   1999 - 2001

  Union of Concerned Scientists   $40,000.00   1995 - 1998

  Center for Food Safety   $35,000.00   1996 - 1996

  Organic Consumers Association   $35,000.00   1999 - 1999

  American Corn Growers Association   $20,000.00   1999 - 1999

"Veterans for Peace" is listed as an organization that has had direct contact with the International Action Center - you know, the outfit apparently founded by Ramsey Clark
http://www.iacenter.org/orgs.htm
"International Action Center"

Towards the top, after wading through the "mission" gobbley goop -

Organizations opposed to sanctions   "The following list covers a number of groups that have organized some form of opposition to sanctions against Iraq, especially those based in countries that were part of the alliance that waged war on Iraq in early 1991. The list is by no means complete, but consists of those groups that have been in direct contact with the International Action Center. The activities carried out by the organizations described here cover a wide variety of approaches to opposing sanctions: providing humanitarian assistance, organizing political opposition, publishing books and other educational material, and taking direct action. They illustrate both the growing opposition to sanctions and the variety of tactics to fight them."

(and what a list it is)

("Veterans for Peace" is shown using the 5011 "K" St. NW, #525 Washington address here)

Sprinkled around on the "Veterans for Peace" site, such as on a page
http://www.veteransforpeace.org/Defaultold.htm,
can be seen "Email VFP", which turns out to be vfp@igc.org ,
What is "igc.org"??? A quick descriptor is on http://www.cein.net/cgi-bin/en/company_info.asp?CID=263 (circa 1999)

Institute for Global Communications (IGC)
Address   POBox 29904
San Francisco, CA  94126-0904
Voice (415) 561-xxxx
Fax       (415) 561-xxxx

Web       http://www.igc.apc.org/
http://www.igc.org/

    Excerpts off of http://www.cein.net/cgi-bin/en/company_info.asp?CID=263

"Since 1992, IGC and its APC members have been the primary information and communications service provider at UN world conferences, including the 1992 United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, the 1993 United Nations Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo and the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing."

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

and most interesting, down towards the bottom -   "IGC Internet is a project of the Tides Center, a 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization."

On their "links" page is a link to the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, which stuck out like a sore thumb

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/links.htm (Them again)

And finally, Veterans for Peace has a listing in the San Francisco Bay Area Progressive Directory -

http://www.bapd.org/dir.html, an index of organizations in the San Francisco area that are related to "progressive activism", though only their website is listed for contact   Hmm, okay.

Here is nice capsule description of the communist scumbag leader of Veterans for Peace:

To: NativeNewYorker
On the company the Soros keeps -
Jim Long, a rabble-rouser for the Veterans Speakers Alliance and Veterans For Peace, showed up to protest a fund raiser for President Bush this summer in San Francisco and extolled the virtues of comrade Castro, dictator for life in Cuba. A screaming mob of anarchists, environmentalists, Marxists, the Service Employees International Union, the Communications Workers of America and Green Party watermelons cheered him on.

Long proudly proclaimed that on every November 11th, he goes to Cuba to meet with comrades and honor communist veterans in a special commemorative ceremony. 11 posted on 08/08/2003 5:53:35 AM PDT by sergeantdave

Let CBS wallow in their well-deserved low credibility, they've earned it! No need to pile on.

Ok, but then how are we gonna get the "conspiracy to control an election" charge to go anywhere legally?

Some of the stuff in this matter has the appearance of "the art that conceals art" as you say. But OTOH some of the stuff has the stench of people who have so much contempt for the right, they are feckless. We'll know more later. Too bad Ambrose Evans-Pritchard is fishing in Wales...

Can an Abilene Freeper get to the Kinkos in question and look for the document in My Documents folder or in Recycle bin? As sloppy as the forgerer has been, it is possible it is there.

Why do they think it would show up on Kinko's computers??? Say, if I was going to do such a sleazy job, I would just go and make copies on one of their self serving copy machines, and then go to the print-shop dept. and have them send the fax from their fax-machine for a charge $ 1.00 per sheet!!!

She would certainly have given Mr. Rather the Peter Arnett escape route...I don't write it, I just read it. With a good tailwind, this could have wings.

Rather said the source lived in a "remote location." Would Burkett's location fit this description? 'Course, city boys might consider it remote.

Abilene is BUSH Country.

I prefer to see it as 79 miles from Midland/Odessa area from where our President hails.

Head west to Abilene (I haven't seen a song about Fr. Worth) then stop in Sweetwater. Not during the Rattlesnake roundup!

Then on to Colorado City, but first cruize through Roscoe and Lorraine. Big Spring, Stanton and then on to M/O...well then Crawford eventually. (make a U turn...)

I don't know why, but it just 'feels' (sorry lib word) like this information would have to get through one more layer to to ORGANIZE this

I think you are right. The so called substance of this story is nothing really new and the known names aren't new. So we have the same sheet music and the same orchestra and CBS gives them a different review? It must be the new conductor that brought them all together.

The best part of this story is the fact this has become a mystery that is challenging other MSM to investigate. The worst that could happen to Rather is for some other news entity to break it wode open and show the documents are false and who provided them. Much better for Rather to come forward and put his own spin on it and confess. Plus, it keeps this story in the forefront, which is killing Kerry.

I agree that Dan's comments in the WaPo tonight is the first sign, that they are getting ready to change course a little on this. I suspect it may come by the end of the week. It will be something like this.

We at CBS have discovered evidence that the memo's may not be real. We cannot any longer validate their authenticity. However, we stick by the overall "essence" of the story based on our other research.
