I got it! Rather releases this story prior to CBS's statement at 5:00. Then CBS can make an independent announcement that they respect the years Mr. Rather as well as his story, but because of external pressure as well as their journalistic integrity Mr. Rather and CBS will be parting company. This way CBS looks good and Rather appears to be a hero standing by his story enough to lose his job.
