CBS won't reveal memos' source - Stand may cause distrust, news chief acknowledges
The Baltimore Sun ^ | September 15, 2004 | David Folkenflik

CBS News President Andrew Heyward said yesterday that his network will not reveal the source of disputed documents used to report that President Bush received favored treatment in the Texas Air National Guard, even though that decision may mean many Americans would distrust a 60 Minutes report on the subject. "I'm confident the story was appropriately vetted before it went on the air. It is the nature of this kind of investigative reporting that sometimes sources remain confidential," Heyward said in a telephone interview. "We're going to hang tough, even if that leaves some questions unanswered."

The charged political atmosphere surrounding the story has made it more difficult to identify sources publicly, he said.

"This is a political hot potato," Heyward said. "There's a kind of harassment, an attempt to intimidate, that I think gives people pause."

In this thread newbie charleston1 notes that when Will displayed a document in the ABC story to which she had objected, it was NOT one of the documents which CBS later posted. It was one of the extra two which were later posted by USA TODAY.

charleston1 pointed out that this indicates that CBS was shopping for authentication and willing to suppress documents which did not pass muster. However, forgery specialists contend that a collection of documents have to either stand together or they are all suspect.

This points to a corrupt vetting process on behalf of the CBS producers.

I have asked charleston1 to post screen shots from the ABC story. Such evidence should be enough to create havoc within CBS itself. This type of evidence does not require any technical analysis to see that ethics have been breached.

The real story is that a felony (forgery) may have been committed to affect the outcome of a presidential election.

Who is CBS protecting? Would it ruin Kerry in Sept?

This is HUGE!

I'm cool with that. Conspiracy after the fact to forge government documents sounds like an excellent thing to have before a jury.

Can't wait for CBS to refuse a congressional subpoena.

I heard Boston Globe also got copies. IMO, they'd be the weak link to go after. Heck, they could even write some real news for a change with what they know. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants? lol

This is a great opportunity for the rest of the MSM....just imagine....all of the MSM start labeling CBS as the New National Enquirer....great way to get rid of the competition...

And to think that for decades the liberals were considered the progressive one's...

A new mindset of the public appears to have them "stuck in the mud"!

"Must have come from the Kerry camp. There's no other reasonable interpretation of this behavior."

Absolutely. I see no other remotely plausible explanation.

Yes, CBS *can't* hold out after the Boston Globe or USA Today decides to go for a Pulitzer by burning the forger/source.

Sad, though. The longer this scandal simmers on hot, the better!

CBS will will deem it preferable to be found being loyal to unnamed (but fraudulent) sources then being seen as disloyal to a fraudulent DNC/Kerry Campaign.

This is called damage control and I predict CBS will admit by Friday to being "misled".

Imagine what the alternative must be?

The forgeries must be from the DNC.

Andy, you can go one of two ways: You guys can burn the retards who gave you those crappy forgeries, or you can have Mike Wallace's future interviewees laugh in his face when he tells them he's trying to get to the truth. I think the only reason Andy Card hasn't lifted your guys' White House press passes for impersonating a legitimate news organization is because he feels sorry for you.

He said he was aware of the steps used to assure the story's accuracy before it was broadcast. Asked how viewers should evaluate the story, Heyward pointed to the reputation of 60 Minutes for respected and aggressive journalism.

"I would hope our experience and our reputation is a help there," Heyward said. "If we were constantly wrong and constantly irresponsible, I wouldn't expect viewers to believe us."

This has been the talking point today. They are basically saying, "we should be talking about the facts revealed in our story rather than questioning the fact that our story is based on forged facts.", or something like that. They actually believe the very people who were smart enough to "out" them will fall for that line.

Yowie! I guess it now comes down to how well they think they can Weather the storm and a big one is headed their way. I wonder if they will try this if there are Congressional hearings.

CBS has its big Monday night lineup starting this Monday, 9/20....Everybody Loves Raymond, Still Standing, Two and a Half Men, and a new one is debuting.

These shows are the big money makers for CBS. I love them, but unless they do something pronto about this forgery, I won't watch them.
