BELLEVUE, WA— For the second time in less than a week, ABC News anchor Peter Jennings has erroneously reported on an aspect of so-called “assault weapons,” claiming in an ABC Radio report broadcast Monday afternoon that the husband of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) was killed with an assault rifle.
“That is not true, and even the slightest research effort by Jennings or a research assistant would have shown that Dennis McCarthy was killed with a 9mm pistol, purchased legally in California by a racist lunatic named Colin Ferguson,” said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF). “With this assertion, Jennings is quickly establishing himself as ABC News’ director of anti-gun propaganda instead of its nightly news anchor.”
No, no, Jennings is the Dan Rather of ABC.

As in most topics and experiences in life, the more informed one is; and the better overall knowledge one has on the a topic, the lattitude in making decisions and judgements, becomes more clear. It isn't about facts with these news anchors....they have an agenda. That is what counts. They can't let little details get in the way.
In spite of Jennings and his ilk, I am impressed with just how dead the gun control issue is in terms of presidential politics. A substantial number DUers think (correctly)that the AWB is a total crock. I guess they are reaching for their rifles in lieu of the impending Ashcroft/Bush imperial takeover.
This is just another example of lefty media using disinformation to launch an attack on Bush.
Perhaps they should look at what an millitary "assault" rifle really is, and realize that those type of weapons are NOT available to the public, and never have been since 1937.
Basicly all the ban was, is a ban on guns that LOOK like assault rifles.
As long as they look like a normal hunting rifle they were perfectly legal. The ban was a JOKE to begin with.

The "dog" in this fight is not guns, but rights. Regardless of whether or not you choose to excercise your right to own and bear arms, you should be interested in defending it. Would you deny that you had any interest in the Right to Life just because you will never again be a fetus? Or would you deny any interest in the War on Terror because the possibility of being killed by a terrorist is very tiny compared to heart disease, accident, etc?
The nut job went on to serve as his own attorney in court, not having to worry in the slightest about facing any death penalty.

ABC News spread the EXACT SAME DISINFORMATION BEFORE the so-called "assault weapons" ban was passed in 1994. I, and MANY others called, wrote, and emailed them to complaign that they were playing video AND audio of FULLY-automatic weapons while the reporters stroryline discussed Clintons SEMI-automatic gun ban. Were they doing it out of ignorance, or did they have an anti-gun agenda (much in the same way that Dan Rather and CBS have a PROVEN Bush-bashing, election-altering agenda now)? When they did it AGAIN recently in an OBVIOUS effort to misinform, scare,and incite an ignorant (where guns and the 2nd Amendment are concerned) general public into trying to pressure their representatives into supporting the renewal of Clinton's ban. It is quite OBVIOUS, at least NOW, this second time around, that they DO, in FACT, have an anti-gun agenda. If they would lie about what the SEMI-auto weapons ban covered, by playing audio & video of the violent North Hollywood bank robbers using FULLY-automatic weapons (which have been SEVERLY restricted by the National Firearms Act of 1934), then it is no surprise that they would LIE about the type of weapon black rascist Colin Ferguson used to murder innocent people on the Long Island railway. With their, and rabid anti-gun groups ever-changing and expanding definitions of "assault weapons", common pistols with magazines holding more than the arbitrary TEN rounds of ammunition - ARE, in their twisted, ignorant minds - "assault weapons". It is this SLICK, CALCULATED use of ever shifting and growing definitions (like Clinton's the definition of is, IS), we law-abiding gun manufacturers, dealers, and owners CAN NOT WIN... that is, if we don't FIGHT BACK, and expose the outright LIES. It is this use of anti-gun propaganda that enables rabid anti-gun fanatics, like the anti-American goofballs at the Violence Policy Institute, to say that 1 in 5 police officer shootings are done with "asault weapons". By their own twisted definitions, a street cops own issue pistol, usually a Glock 22 with a "high capacity" (over the arbitrary TEN rounds) magazine, IS... an EVIL assault weapon. The FACT that many cop shootings involve a criminal wresting control of the officers weapon and shooting the officer with his/her OWN WEAPON enables VPC to skew this statistic (the 1 in 5 B.S. number) into their anti-gun favor. It is VPC, which YEARS ago, saw the value of CONFUSING the public about the REAL differences between REAL assault weapons (rifles or carbines that have a FULL, or BURST fire capability they fire as long as the trigger is depressed, and the magazine is full, barring malfunctions), and SEMI-automatic weapons (those, like MILLIONS of common hunting rifles and carbines, are firearms that shoot ONCE with each pull of the trigger, until the magazine is empty or a malfunction occurs). They used this confusion, AND the help of the left-wing, anti-gun media, to push the Clinton/Reno semi-auto gun ban in the first place, and they tried their best to do the same in an effort to renew it. Thank GOD they failed this time around, but we've got to watch for them trying again in the not to distant future, and DEFINITELY ASAP, if John F'ing Kerry is elected (God forbid).

I've always been opposed to ANY and ALL gun control, but I never owned a gun because my wife is scared of them . . . until she heard about Beslan . . . and told me maye it's time to buy an assault weapon.
