CBS Parent Viacom Takes 8 MILLION DOLLAR BEATING on Rathergate and Fox News

Posted on 09/13/2004 8:00:31 PM PDT by onenation11

ViaCON's stock is down 28 cents a share, or about 3/4 of 1% (for those who know the stock market, that's a SIGNIFICANT move for a single day)

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=VIA&t=1d

Headlines show that "Rathergate" and Fox News are KILLING THEM!!!

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/h?s=VIA

This incident, coupled with the favorable Fox News info has driven down Viacom stock prices by ALMOST 80 MILLION DOLLARS IN ONE DAY!!!

$10,331,600,000 x 0.00079 = $8,161,964

[Last Year's ending Stock value] x [Day's % loss] = Dollar Loss

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=VIA&annual

Yahoo has removed the message board for ViaCom, apparently they can't take the criticism.

Good, It must continue. They should lose a lot more. They should have to take it in the backside for trying to get the traitor elected with bogus, biased reporting.

How does this make Viacom's stock go down? I don't see the connection between Fox stock going up and Viacom going down. Also, how does Rather's forged documents translate into the stock price going down? While, this is good news, I don't see how any of this is related to each other.

CBS in its present form must cease to exist. Nothing else will change how it does business.

I hate to burst your bubble (I wish you were right), but I think this is just a normal price fluctuation. Plus, there was not the slightest increase in volume - an indication of heavy selling. The future will tell, but I think tying today's fluctuation to forgery-gate is a stretch. There have historically been many intraday fluctuations bigger than this.

As much as I would like for VIA to tank over this, I have my doubts whether the drop you're referring to is actually a reaction to the controversy.

VIA actually ROSE 3x that amount on Friday, which was the first full day of trading after the story really hit.

Don't get me wrong - I think VIA is going to be affected by this eventually, I just don't think we're seeing it yet.

Look at the media stories. It is the headlines and insider info (regardless of what people think) that drive stock values.

VIACOM IS NEAR ITS 52 WEEK LOW, AND HEADED DOWN!! LET'S SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HAMMER VIACOM ADVERTISERS AND MEDIA OUTLETS!!!

Ahem, I hope you don't do your own analysis for your own portfolio.
1.A stock down .79% in one day is no big deal in terms of stock moves.
2. The figure of $10,331,600 is year end gross profit, has nothing to do with the value of the company(and it is in thousands so the above figure is really 10.3 billion
3. The way to calculate the decline in mkt value today is to multiply the outstanding shares by the amount of the price decline.
4. As the market cap of viacom is over 50 billion, and it was down today .079%, the market value decline is around $400 million, not $8 million.
2.

I'm afraid the movement of Viacom stock hasn't yet shown the kind of movement that will scare the Board of Directors. The stock price went up almost a point on Friday, and it declined only .28 today.

I'd like to believe that CBS will be forced to face reality, but I dunno. If they continue to stonewall, I don't see a recourse.

How does this make Viacom's stock go down?

Since Viacom owns CBS, if CBS's news is shown to be disreputable, the network will negatively impact its parent company. There will probably be revenue lost from the loss of viewers, lower ad rates, and possibly even cancelled advertising.
