The lead expert retained by CBS News to examine disputed memos from President Bush's former squadron commander in the National Guard said yesterday that he examined only the late officer's signature and made no attempt to authenticate the documents themselves.

If I recall correctly, that Matley guy was already under investigation by some kind of specialist agency.

He thought it was easy money-- tell See BS what they wanted to hear (they're real), get paid and go home. Since he was anonymous when the report first aired, he didn't think it would ever come back to bite his ass.

Yup. It's a new world the MSM is gonna have to learn to live in. This fraudulent story would have never been exposed just a few years ago.

"But the memo is dated Aug. 18, 1973, nearly a year and a half after Staudt retired from the Guard. Questioned about the discrepancy over the weekend, CBS officials said that Staudt was a "mythic figure" in the Guard who exercised influence from behind the scenes even after his retirement. "

And they expect to get away with such inane explanations...because they always have.

Wolf Blitzer's live interview w/ Michael Dobbs last week:

"If you compare the documents that CBS produced with the documents that we know to be authentic, that did come from Bush's National Guard unit, none of those documents use proportionate spacing. And that's only one of the anomalies," says the Post's Michael Dobbs.

Anyone have CBS policy memos on vetting articles?

It's a smell test.

Problem with it is that they can't smell their own bad breath.

Thanks Dan for not backing down.

You kept the story alive.

Now for the cover up phase.

Since the WP has pretty much reported that they are fakes, the story now becomes: Who forged the docs? Did CBS and the DNC conspire to manipulate the news to change the outcome of a federal election?

Gee when I reading the Wash. post article, I thought, for just a second, I was reading a Freeper thread from last Thursday morning.

I too am in a little shock...Is there any expert, ANY, that would put their reputation on line, and authenticate without waffle words, the documents? Any?

I have to give credit where credit is due. The original idea came from Darkwolf377... the Photoshop work to bring his concept to FreeRepublic is mine.

That's funny, the same CBS expert in an ABA article said he cannot aunthenticate a signature unless it's an original document:

http://d2d.ali-aba.org/_files/thumbs/components/PLIT0209-MATLEY_thumb.pdf

Marcel Matley authenticated the photocopied memos for CBS. Per Matley himself two years ago, it is physically impossible to authenticate a document from a photocopy. From the American Law Institute - American Bar Association.

Using and Cross-Examining Handwriting Experts
September 2002

Marcel B. Matley

"In fact, modern copiers and computer printers are so good that they permit easy fabrication of quality forgeries. From a copy, the document examiner cannot authenticate the unseen original but may well be able to determine that the unseen original is false. Further, a definite finding of authenticity for a signature is not possible from a photocopy, while a definite finding of falsity is possible."

He's an "expert". A discredited expert is useless. Either he comes clean or he throws his career down the toilet.

Bingo, Marcel Matley knows he needs to come clean or never work again.

LOL, Hey CBS, got any 'experts' left who will support the story or is Dan Rather just going to hide under the covers with the blanket over his head?

For crying out loud. Forged documents, non-expert experts, misquoted witnesses, and a Kerry fundraiser who's a certified liar as their main "evidence." Dan is obviously a dunce or a dirtbag. But what explains the inaction of his boss? Is SeeBS News run by a dead man, or what?

Experts must rely on the quality of their work...word of mouth in a story like this will sink a reputation faster than we can blink. Old Marcel must have thought more about protecting his reputation..i.e. his wallet than getting hanoi john flip flop kerry elected.

Dems EXCEL at half-truths and propaganda and know that it works. They figure all they need to do is come up with talking points for dem talking heads so they can say something, anything to exhaust this story and wait it out. This is the early days of the Clinton impeachment strategy all over again. They think some new story will come out to eclipse this and it will be get buried like Gary Condit who got away with murder.

I watched Dan Rather this evening on CBS ... his arrogance and defiance in denying this obviously bogus story (prove I'm wrong)is astounding ... apparently his counterparts in the MSM feel much the same way ... Rather, in order to retain a modicum of self respect for the media in general, needs to be brought down ... the process has begun.
