Journalist killed on camera
Sunday Times ^

Posted on 09/13/2004 10:35:43 AM PDT by billbirmingham

A PALESTINIAN television journalist was killed today as he was giving a live report to camera on deadly clashes between US forces and insurgents in the heart of the Iraqi capital.

Residents of his home town in the West Bank watched in horror as Mazen al-Tomaisi, who worked for Saudi television Akhbariya and for the pan-Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya, went down.

Mr Tomaisi, 28, was killed when a US helicopter fired missiles on a mob which had gathered round a US tank in Baghdad that had been set ablaze in a car bomb attack, one of a string of bombings across the capital today.

Blood spattered across the cameraman's lens and screams were heard by viewers of the Al-Arabiya report.

Mr Tomaisi, from the West Bank town of Idna, is the fourth Palestinian journalist killed in Iraq.

An Iraqi cameraman and an Iraqi photographer were also slightly wounded by flying shrapnel during the attack.

An Iraqi official later said a total of 13 people were killed, including two children, and 55 were wounded during the battle in Haifa Street, a suspected bastion of Saddam Hussein loyalists, where insurgents and US troops clash regularly

He was in the process of transmitting the typical Muslim propaganda showing the Iraqis dancing on the American tank. That automatically indicates he sides with the terrorists there.

I wonder if the reporter gave equal time to the incident earlier in the day when the "insurgents" killed three Iraqi civilians with another car bomb, including a 12-year old boy.

I'm not glorying in his death, but won't stir myself to bestow a drop of sympathy on him... at the very least he died from pure stupidity at standing so close to a tank when he had to know that we destroy them as soon as possible once they are disabled and abandoned.

Equating Islam automatically with terrorism

I don't... but I do equate Palestinians with terrorism.

I feel kinda bad for this guy and any family. BUT, this message had to be sent. THIS IS FRIGGIN WAR!!!! You better stay the hell away from our stuff, especially if our soldiers have been hurt in the attack there-on. This isn't some kids game where we're playing king of the hill. This is life and death. If, as a reporter, you are standing next to a bunch of celebrating people dancing around the burning shell of a vehicle in which several Americans were just attacked and injured. You have ZERO right to whine if other American troops blow you up. And I will not shed a tear if you are. Idiots.

I read the guy was home asleep, then got up and went to the scene.

He was a Palestinian and educated at Baghdad University during the Saddam regime. Somehow, I don't feel sorry for any of those people celebrating on our Bradley Fighting Vehicle. I would guess that "good people" would go elsewhere during an attack, etc.

Is it a form of mental illness for the cops, firemen, soldiers and others who also enjoy the danger of their jobs?

Quote: "...Another thing to teach your kids; don't dance around disabled military vehicles that are still smoking."

Exactly. If the ammo inside doesn't light off and get you. The troops that come to rescue the crew will.

I looked at the headline and thought it was about Rather's performance last Friday.

We disagree, then. I believe- not having seen too many videos- that your American journalists in Vietnam showed harrowing scenes on television. That did not make them Vietcong sympathizers. Nor does it make terrorists sympathizers out of American, or other, journalists who show the same scenes in Iraq.

The inability of reporters to show the good that is being done by Americans in Iraq, or the ugliness of Muslim fundamentalism, is a sore point with me as well. The scenes of people celebrating 9-11 on Arab streets is something I will not forget. I believe that Islamic revivalism is a great danger. My country has suffered because of Muslim terrorism. But I stand by my original statement.

Good to have spoken to you. I have to go now- its past midnight here.

it's called thinning of the herd, the weak and stupid fall first.
I know he was reporting how mystified he was about how the iraqi's were dancing with sorrow over the possibility the American troops might have been injured.
