The seismic data for the NK blast was 2.6 on the Richter scale...substantially smaller than the 3.5 made by the larger of two conventional blasts that sunk the Russian Kursk submarine...

different Richter readings for blasts within water
vs. within ground

different Richter readings for small air-burst nuke
tests vs. in-ground tests of similar size

[Note: no tin-foil hat, just a desire to MAKE SURE]
[Note: other FReeper thread fed data into public-domain
code from Lawrence Livermore, HOTSPOT, to gauge
size of detonations from mushroom cloud, came up
with answer in low kilotons (tactical nuke or
nuclear trigger)... ]
