DNC TO LAUNCH FRESH ATTACK ON BUSH GUARD DUTY:  WILL RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT 1978 CAMPAIGN LIT

**Exclusive**

Faster than a CBS eye can blink, dogged Dems are set to take to the airwaves anew hoping to keep questions about President Bush's National Guard duty in play, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Candidate Kerry apparently has rejected former President Clinton's advice not to get further locked in a 2004 Vietnam quagmire.

"George W. Bush's campaign literature claimed that he 'served in the U.S. Air Force.' The only problem? He didn't,"  slams a new DNC press release set for distribution.

Dems will attempt to increase the heat on Bush ahead of his planned Tuesday address before The National Guard Association gathering in Las Vegas.

In 2000, Bush opened his National Guard Association speech: "General, I am reporting for duty."

MORE

Kerry plans to speak to the group on Thursday, but he personally hold back questioning Bush's service, sources explain.

The coordinated nationwide effort this week by the DNC has been code-named "Project Fortunate Son."

"George Bush has a clear pattern of lying about his military service," DNC Communications Director Jano Cabrera blasts in the new release. "From 1978 to the present day, George Bush has refused to tell voters the truth about his service. It's time for the President to come clean."

"Flyers distributed to Texas voters during Bush's failed Congressional race say 'he served in the U.S. Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard.' But according to Air Force officials, Air National Guardsmen are not counted as members of the active-duty Air Force."

It is a matter of semantics. Bush never said flatly he was plain USAF he said USAF and ANG, a very distinctive difference, not to mention YOU ARE PART OF THE AIR FORCE when you wear that uniform, it does not say on your uniform "National Guard" its says US Air Force, any claims to the contrary is simply crazy. Believe me once this line of attack comes out the millions of national guardsmen out there will be totally PO'd, unless they are Kerry partisans.

Someone then needs to ask Terry NcAuliffe where George Bush was from 1968-1970???

Won't work .. they are in desperation overload mode

Translation = their internal polls must really suck

I don't see how it {Laura Bush/car accident at 17} could possibly be an issue. You'd think the Ted Kennedy factor would prevent anybody from bringing it up...

...This is absolutely ridiculous....is anyone else tired of hearing about swift boats and typewriters?...

Lame attempt at damage control, noob. You had best re-read the "I've been a conservative all my life, but..." fax again and fine tune your presentation.

This is BS.....when a Guardsman is ordered to active duty for training they are in the Army/Air Force for that period...then revert back when training is finished to whatever State Guard...their DD214 shows those periods as active duty time....this per my hubby...Mike1sg..ILARNG...34years

lets not get complacent.

I would like to see an official investigation of the forgeries. FAKE military documents are not to be circulating. IF I were military I would want to know who was generating fake documents and if they were doing it for other things. (just like the treasury department keeps file of every counterfit note)

We have to keep fighting.

The media may focus on a campaign nuance but ignore Kerry's litteral sleepwalking.

Does everybody (except FReepers) have the memory of a gnat or what?

We have been there, done that.

The DUmmies at DUllsville don't have a "Web Exclusive". What saps.

Please note this article (one of many, as you all can imagine) from 1999:

Bush defends 1978 ad citing Air Force service

July 17, 1999

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — In 1978 campaign literature, George W. Bush said he served in the Air Force, a statement his Presidential campaign says is legitimate based on time he spent training and on alert while a member of the Texas Air National Guard.

The Air Force says once a guardsman, always a guardsman, even if called to active duty for training or another temporary assignment.

The Republican Presidential front-runner already had faced questions about whether he received preferential treatment when he joined the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War.

A pullout ad from The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on May 4, 1978, shows a huge picture of Bush with a "Bush for Congress" logo on the front. On the back, a synopsis of his career says he served "in the U.S. Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard, where he piloted the F-102 aircraft."

Asked about the statement that the Texas governor served in the Air Force, spokeswoman Karen Hughes said yesterday that it was all accurate. She said that while Bush was attending flight school from November 1968 to November 1969, he was considered to be on active duty for the U.S. Air Force. Also, at several times when he was serving in the Guard, he was placed on alert and considered to be on active duty as well, she said.

The Air Force says that Air National Guard members are considered "guardsmen on active duty" while receiving pilot training. They are not, however, counted as members of the overall active-duty Air Force.

~SNIP~

I'll mail a link to Drudge. My goodness, the minute I read this I distinctly remembered this being hashed over in the 2000 campaign.

This latest Kerry tactic reeks of desperation.

It is getting difficult for the Kerry campaign to bust through their own swill to get a message out there. They are pathetic and this will go down as the most lame campaign for President since at least Mondale and possibly McGovern.

Beautifully put.

Exactly.

"The Air National Guard
The Air National Guard also has total responsibility for air defense of the entire United States. In addition, it serves as a reserve component of the U.S. regular Air Force. "

http://www.princetonreview.com/cte/articles/military/airguardoverview.asp

And while they are playing with semantics, Kerry enlisted into the Naval Reserve, NOT the Navy.

" Kerry joined the Navy Reserve and did not expect to go to Vietnam. When Kerry did go to Vietnam the swift boats were not dping river patrols. They were doing coastal patrols and were not in much danger. That is when he volunteered to join the Swiftees. The assignment of those boats was changed after he was accepted for the duty. Surprise, he got action and the rest is disputed history.

The information in this article was published in George Magazine, New York Times, Washington Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Washington Post, and on aerospaceweb.org."

Good job, cyn, but where are the Republicans?

By the way, this latest NG push from Kerry really, really makes it look like they were behind the phony CBS Memos.

Zheesh, I'm speechless. You debunked their campaign before it even started.

Is it possible that these moveon types don't even know that this is what the AF was saying back then? Guess so.

Every day of this is one more day the Kerry recovery, if any is to occur, is delayed.

I think this part 2 of the post convention attack, but part 1 was stillborn due to extreme cBS bias.

This will PO millions of National Guardsmen, especially those who have served in Iraq, Vietnam and other wars. How dare they say they arent part of the Army or Air Force when the dang branch is on there uniform, on there orders every where they look it is part of there service and to have some half-cocked weasel come out and say somebody was never in the Air Force when clearly they were is an insult not to be taken lightly.

Can you believe these people! I swear they make this stuff up as they go along. Proof you ask? They apparently don't need proof and DON'T HAVE ANY! I hope this sinks Kerry ANOTHER 10 points in the polls!

Are Drudge and the DNC really using DU as THEIR source for this next smear at Bush?

The sound you hear is the DUmmies crying, "Pay attention to us, we're relevant too! Look, we're even wearing pajamas!"
