(Stratford-AP, Sept. 11, 2004 11:45 AM) _ The mother of a Stratford elementary school student says she wants her 11-year-old daughter exempted from the school's dress code on moral, religious and medical grounds.
Paula Gabriele, whose daughter attends the public magnet school Stratford Academy, says she met with school officials to ask that her daughter not be required to wear white or navy collared shirts and khaki or navy pants.
But she says her request was denied. In addition to her philosophical opposition to uniforms, Gabriele also says her daughter has severe eczema on her legs, which she says is aggravated by all fabrics except denim.
School officials aren't commenting. Gabriele says she's considering suing.
Her daughter, meanwhile, has already been suspended and could be expelled for not conforming to the dress code.
Damn these people who sign their kids up for alternative schools, then immediately set about trying to destroy the program.
She can get a denim navy trousers made up.
The rest of her arguments are rubbish.
Except denim?
What a load.
And you wonder why teachers and school administrators get paid 12 months pay for only working 9 months? It's because they put up with parents like this!
Let's see... moral grounds... meaning it's okay to wear Calvins but not okay to wear khaki / navy pants.
And those required pants make her break out? I have various skin ailments so I can sympathize with the poor girl, but I can assure you that I indeed wear Khakis and Navies.
Religious grounds... having a M.Div I can tell you that I've never encounted a religious group that requires denim and eschews more respectable attire.
People send their children to school like this for that specific reason...orderly discipline. Rules cannot be changed because of one person's problem. When are we going to learn?
Church of Levi Strauss? :)
Little Susie can wear whatever momy picks out for her each morning. She just won't wear them to this alternative schoool. It's called choice.
What about the separation of church and state. Her religious elements can't be brought into the classroom. Why Susie might even wwant to start each class with a prayer. Where will it end?
And she also has a stomach condition that is aggravated by all free government-funded lunch foods except sirloin steak.
No kidding. I've a nice pair of navy denim slacks. Tough to keep 'em properly pressed, of course (g!).
What kind adult will this little girl grow into, since her mama is obviously a child?
Send her to a religious school.
Oh wait, religious schools also require uniforms.
Homeschool.
Why is a public school initiating uniforms in the first place? The minute our public school starts talking about uniforms, I'm running for school board and organizing a strong opposition to any board member for them. If that fails, I will homeschool or transfer. Uniforms are for private schools, not public.
Response: Ok. This nonentity has had her fifteen (15) minutes of fame. Let us move on!
I totally respect your opinion. However, our public schools went to uniforms and I must say it's soooo much nicer now to see these students in their khakis and polo shirts. Before it was sickening to see the boys with their pants hanging down below their butts and half of their underwear sticking out and some of the girls dressing like tramps.
Mom's boat-load of ca-ca alert!!
She has NO reasonable objections and (clearly) too much money so she can keep buying new clothes instead of buying the school uniforms and being done with it!!
One of the rules for attending is wearing a uniform. The mother had to know this when she signed her daughter up. If she objects to the uniform policy, the girl can go to the neighborhood school.
My daughter's charter has a uniform policy. The only exceptions they have made were for an allergic child who had to match the uniform closely in all cotton, and for kids with broken legs who can wear sweats or other looser fitting pants. There is a skirt option for girls, so the religious objection can be met.
But she says her request was denied. In addition to her philosophical opposition to uniforms, Gabriele also says her daughter has severe eczema on her legs, which she says is aggravated by all fabrics except denim.

What a load.""
How stupid is this "Mother"?????
I have sewed for years. Unless things have drastically changed, "DENIM" is not more than COTTON, a perfectly natural crop, that is dyed a dark indigo blue, which over time fades.
She signed up for a good school. She does NOT get to set the agenda. She can homeschool her brat or get better medical attention for her.
If this "allergy" or problem her daughter has continues into her adult years, is the girl going to sue all her future employers when they set a dress code?
GET A LIFE. You don't get to set all the rules to suit yourself in the big wide world. Next thing she'll be asking for the river to flow differently so that her darling can "enjoy the experience of river rafting safely" or some such.
