It wasn't stupidity, it was Rather's fanatical hatred for Bush and his obsession to destroy him that caused this fiasco.
I can just picture Mr. Rather, wide-eyed and salivating when he was approached by the "source" and told about the great 'discovery' that would ruin Bush. In his lust and his haste to be the man who would expose President Bush as a liar and a coward, Mr Rather got careless about verifying the authenticy of the memos.
As the old saying goes, "hatred is like acid, it eats through its own container". So the irony of it all is that Dan Rather's passion to see Bush destroyed has backfired and cost him his own reputation and probably his career.
I know these articles have limited space, but aren't a few salient points missing? What about Matley's claim that he TOLD CBS he couldn't authenticate a signature that wasn't original? What about proof-positive that the 60 Minutes documents COULD NOT have been typed by a nontypist on so complex a machine as the IBM Executive? What about the son's remarks about Killian's shared secretary? What about the document the son produced that SHE typed? What about the paper-size and resultant margin-set? What about the provenance of these PRIVATE documents?
When the FAMOUS post # 47 the other day on the FR thread first proved the forgery, it was posted by "Buckhead".

Fox News just did a report by Megan someone and did NOT nail down that this is a forgery...they are reporting it as a "he said. she said" thing. FOX EVEN DISGUSTS ME.
