DALLAS -- New information casts additional doubts about the authenticity of the memos purportedly written concerning President Bush by a former superior officer in the Texas Air National Guard in the 1970s, as Dan Rather and CBS News doggedly stuck to their guns defending the documents.
"They're forged as hell," said Earl W. Lively, 76, who during the era in question was director of Texas Air National Guard operations in Austin.
Mr. Lively said he had proof that Col. Walter "Buck" Staudt -- who supposedly forced an underling to favorably alter reports on Mr. Bush's activities as a member of the Guard in the early 1970s -- had been honorably discharged nearly 18 months before the date of the memos, purportedly written by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian.
After Mr. Lively's revelation, the Dallas Morning News discovered records amid the newspaper's archives, from when the paper investigated Mr. Bush's Guard career in 1999, that show Mr. Staudt had left the Guard on March 1, 1972.
One of the memos concerning Mr. Staudt's supposed pressure to ensure that Mr. Bush's record was to be "sugar coated" was dated Aug. 18, 1973.
Mr. Killian at the time was Mr. Bush's squadron leader.
"And there's no way that Jerry Killian would have written what they've come up with," added Mr. Lively, now one of the most successful real estate agents in Dallas.

We'll without these "new" documents, this issue couldn't have been raised again. The purpose of all this was to divert attention from the wounded Kerry and attack Bush. Notice everytime a Dem talking head responds to memogate, they have to spew a whole list of talking points about Bush being AWOL. Dan Rather probably volunteered for the mission knowing that at 72, if things got too hot, he could just retire.

If Dan Rather's sources are "unimpeachable", why won't they step forward? By definition, they can't be impeached. So they won't be embarrassed.

You just laid the Wood on them.

I would like to see a "help wanted ad" with Rather's job description.
Then Fax or e-mail Dan the ad that someone "found"......say on "monster.com", or from NYT, or the Globe...

That is interesting. Yesterday, the Dallas Morning News tried to make it look like they broke this story (looked over their documents) on there own.
It seems they had to be told to look at the issue.
YOU CAN NOT TRUST THE MEDIA. RATHER SHOULD BE FIRED!

I like this guy. He is clear about the memos being forged. Why are all the newspapers saying "casting doubt" when these are such obvious frauds?

OK I need some help. I do not understand to continued references to "Kenneth" and "Frequency". Could someone fill me in?

Dan Rather got assaulted by someone in New York back in the 80s, IIRC. The perp walked up to Dan Rather, asked "Kenneth, what's the frequency", and hit him. REM subsequently wrote a song "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" in part about the incident.

I know these articles have limited space, but aren't a few salient points missing? What about Matley's claim that he TOLD CBS he couldn't authenticate a signature that wasn't original? What about proof-positive that the 60 Minutes documents COULD NOT have been typed by a nontypist on so complex a machine as the IBM Executive? What about the son's remarks about Killian's shared secretary? What about the document the son produced that SHE typed? What about the paper-size and resultant margin-set? What about the provenance of these PRIVATE documents?

Which of these statements from CBS and Dan Rather are true?
A. "We believe the experts who agree with us, and will vigorously discredit those who do not".
B. "We believe what the witnesse we interviewed said before he found out he'd been duped".
C. "We believe that the IBM Selectric and maybe even older typewriters can recreate any font and spacing available with modern computers".
D. "We believe that Colonels have nothing better to do then write memos to themselves, and that their families are liars".
E. "We believe John Kerry should be the next President of the United States of America".
Hey, this just keeps getting better and better. Call Johnny Cochran Dan you lying ratbag. Maybe he can keep you out of jail, but nobody is going to be able to stop the media from eating you alive.
