On September 10, 2004, Dan Rather declared war on the internet. He shouldn't have because it's a battle he is destined to lose. Addressing only a small part of the hundreds of criticisms that web-based critics and assorted typewriter, font, and military experts have lodged against his report, Rather and his CBS colleagues seem to have a masochistic desire for punishment. The unraveling continues. Two of the three people cited on-camera by CBS News as vouching for its conclusion that Jerry Killian--the former Air National Guard commanding officer of George W. Bush--authored incriminating memoranda about the future president have, in subsequent interviews with other media organizations, tempered their support for CBS.
Robert Strong, who served with Killian as an officer tells the New York Times that he does not believe that his former associate used a proportional font typewriter during his time in the Texas guard.
"Mr. Strong said in an interview Friday he was quite sure that he and others used Selectrics in the adjutant general's office. He added that he was not sure the typewriters and devices were also in the 147th Combat Support Squadron at the Ellington base in Houston, home of the 111th squadron.
"'I'm skeptical that Killian was working on that,' Mr. Strong said."
Strong's comments come on the heels of a statement from Marcel Matley, a writing analyst whom CBS presented as having certified its four documents. Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, however, Matley said that he only vouched for one to the network.
Perhaps it's time for them to remove a LARGE chunk of OVERHEAD, LOL. Seriesly.

I think this September Surprise was just the first shot in a whole salvo of material they were planning to release. Now anything surfacing after this is going to be tainted. OTOH, they are probably working on much better forgeries now, using the information gleaned from our critiques.

This is actually kind of funny. Rather made a very weak defense on Friday (he has a very weak case), hoping the story would go away over the weekend. What's happening over the weekend is that his "experts" are recanting left and right. This will be all over the Sunday talk shows. It will not go away by Monday.
I'd be surprised if the NG really used Selectrics. I was in an Army Reserve unit back then, and I'm pretty sure all our typrwriters were manuals. Selectrics were expensive, and usually involved IBM maintenance contracts. Pretty high end stuff for a Guard unit. But I suppose it's possible.
Do you know this for a fact? Elsewhere, it is said the Bob Strong at Washington & Lee with ties to Soros is not the Robert Strong CBS referenced in the documents story.
Plus, the legacy print news weeklies are eager to get into this battle. This type of "side by side" forgery comparison story is their forte. This weekend, the non-Viacom/CBS news weeklies are working around the clock. Their photos dissections of the forgeries will be brutal. More MSM 16" shells to land on Rather next week.

Uh ... well ... kinda. FR is a fantastic resource created and populated by real people. And, like all humans, we have a tendency to factionalize.
Just don't take it personally when you get smacked around. Give everyone a day or two to cool off and forgive and forget.

wow. I like this guys writing style. this the best compilation of evidence, written simplistically and understandably. If only the mainstream media would report like him....
The more this is in the news, the more it helps GW. Remember when Reagan fired back at his distractors with the comment "there they go again."
This has the same effect. To a large extent, this handcuffs the media from attacking GW because people will just blow it off as media bias.
BTW, in Susan Estrich's latest anti-Bush rant, she asks the question "Are there fewer terrorists who hate us in the world, or more? " Gee, I dunno Susan. Maybe we should have CBS poll the terrorist to find out.
No, I don't know it for sure, so if they are two different people, then my theory is wrong.
I can't follow all these threads but has anyone asked if the military (esp. the ANG) would use typewriters from the early 1970s if they still had typewriters of earlier vintage still in use? My experience has been that, other than big-ticket items, the military are generally tightwads concerning everyday things like office supplies and probably Col. Killian would NOT even *have* a 1970's-era typewriter on his desk, more likely something from the 1950s or 1960s. Not that this means a lot but it makes it even harder to believe his typewriter could have produced these memos.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much. This is all great fun, and it will further erode the reputation of the mainstream Media, and help to bring about their ultimate demise, I hope, I hope. But as for Bush, nobody is going to vote for him or against him based on his service in the National Guard 30 years ago.
Same goes for Kerry, which he might have thought of before he decided to base his campaign on his military service, as if he was Ulysses S. Grant or Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Presidential elections are about the future, not the past. Sure, there will be some voters who will vote for Kerry to get revenge for Al Gore & Floriduh, and there will be some who vote for Bush to smack Kerry for his treasonous treatment of his fellow servicemen, but not most. Most will vote for the man they think will have the best impact on their lives over the next four years.
And I don't think John "I'll raise your taxes and appease the French" Kerry is going to be that guy.
I don't think Bush will be hurt or helped much either way by this. However, even if a few people that watch the MSM discover the truth, it will contribute to the inevitable decline of the MSM.

Killian had extraordinarily neat penmanship. So neat in fact, Bill Gates later used it as the basis for a Word font. Killian family is due millions in royalties from Microsoft.

On Friday, 9-10-04, one old media - I think it was Fox - had this guy on to argue for cbs - didnt get his name. He was listed as an ex CBS executive and near the end of his spiel, he said that "these people who call themselves bloggers, somebody lounging around in pajamas in front of their Pc and they think they are going to change the world or that they can effect something...."
Yes. Yes. That's it . . . and, and, and the military was working on a top secret time travel machine and that's how it all happened . . . the TSSTTM . .
