On September 10, 2004, Dan Rather declared war on the internet. He shouldn't have because it's a battle he is destined to lose. Addressing only a small part of the hundreds of criticisms that web-based critics and assorted typewriter, font, and military experts have lodged against his report, Rather and his CBS colleagues seem to have a masochistic desire for punishment. Our latest updates on the Memogate controversy are posted below. For our 21-point rebuttal to Rather's Sept. 10 salvo, click here.
The unraveling continues. Two of the three people cited on-camera by CBS News as vouching for its conclusion that Jerry Killian--the former Air National Guard commanding officer of George W. Bush--authored incriminating memoranda about the future president have, in subsequent interviews with other media organizations, tempered their support for CBS.
Robert Strong, who served with Killian as an officer tells the New York Times that he does not believe that his former associate used a proportional font typewriter during his time in the Texas guard.
"Mr. Strong said in an interview Friday he was quite sure that he and others used Selectrics in the adjutant general's office. He added that he was not sure the typewriters and devices were also in the 147th Combat Support Squadron at the Ellington base in Houston, home of the 111th squadron.
"'I'm skeptical that Killian was working on that,' Mr. Strong said."
Strong's comments come on the heels of a statement from Marcel Matley, a writing analyst whom CBS presented as having certified its four documents. Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, however, Matley said that he only vouched for one to the network.
Can you bring me up to speed, can a selectric perform all the tasks needed to recreate these memos? I am under the impression that it cannot.
To someone who understands type, this is such an obvious and blatant forgery that I can't believe they even tried it. It's akin to putting a 100-dollar bill through a black-and-white photocopier and filling in the colored parts with a crayon.
I wouldn't worry much about it. Yesm 60 minutes has a following, but every other network is concentrating on the forgery story. Far more people are seeing things that will damage Kerry than damage Bush.
Anybody look into the PO Box number? "PO Box 34567" looks....'made up.'
welcome, kathy!
Welcome -- shrewd observation. Been lurkin? :) If you get a chance, stop by the Undead Thread
Welcome to FRee republic!
That was fun, wonder why CBS couldn't figure it out? Guess they didn't want too, eh?
My fondest hope is that this is the "shameful" career ender for Rather. Time for him to go. This is CBS's opportunity to bury the old dinosaur.

1. They would never -- not in a million years -- exactly reproduce the character spacing for each and every character in a modern MS Word font. The chance of that isn't small, it's identically zero (unless Monotype raced over to that Air Force base and immediately bought that particular typewriter and font ball, stored it in an airtight, oxygen-less package for twenty years, and then unpacked it to make the font today--and used a 1000x microscope to do it. I know, I've done that sort of font reproducing, and months of work with a 100x microscope and Fontographer will *not* give you exact results like they apparently have).
2. It would be nearly impossible for two memos created weeks apart to have exactly the same centering in the address at the top. Centering was done by hand: you had to type the text on scratch paper, measure it's width, divide by 2, and then move to the exact starting position on another piece of paper where you would type it again. You might get close, but you would never get it to exactly overlay as these memos do.
Obvious. Blatant. Forgery. Burn 'em, FNC. Burn 'em good.
The "resonation" is going to come when Rather has to admitt they are fakes.
There is NO WAY good citizens or credible journalist can allow forgeries and lies to perpetuate. They must be stopped, and those responsible MUST in some way be held accountable.
Loss of ALL credibility does just fine!
That's why FR is so addictive because there just is no substitute for the pursuit of truth. Truth, above all, MUST prevail!
Welcome to the home of the sane, with a sense of humor of course.

Really looks to me like some of the sources who were so willing to say whatever would help the DNC yesterday realize this sucker is going up in flames in a hurry and want to save their own miserable asses. Blame CBS and come out of with a tad of dignity claiming they were duped or otherwise. Doesn't matter. That's now THREE of their "supporting cast" who have stepped back...
Welcome !.
Stay safe !
CBS/60m/Blather then attack the New Media.
These are going to be recorded in history as two of the most colossal blunders of all time.
C BS and 60 Minutes have gotten by with bs like this for decades.
So in their arrogance, they came out with their October Surprise in September.
However it has turned out to be the October Surprise on them a few weeks early.
Each minute that 60 Minutes, Blather and C BS lie and try to spin their way out of this fiasco for them, is great for our side.
Each minute harms Kerry and helps GW.
Each minute harms ABCNNBC BS and in particuliar C BS.
You noted that Blather is an old Dinosaur. Well the Ice Age for CBS and Blather hit when they released the forgeries and lies about GW this past week. CBS NewsNot and Blather will be history like the dinosaus by the next election cycle.
Welcome to Free Republic and enjoy yourself!
Nobody actually cares about the docs, not even most of the media outlets.
They will run stories probably until about Wednesday and then drop off...it won't even get the play the Swiftvets did.
